Flying Whenever another nontoken Dragon you control enters, create a 5/5 red Dragon creature token with flying. {1}{R}: Dragons you control get +1/+0 until end of turn.
You know the joke about how every Magic set has some 5-mana red mythic rare dragon or whatever? Well, why do you think they keep going back to that well? Dragons are cool. Always have been, always will be, and if I were in a position where I had to pick out the themes for five Commander decks built to attract new players to the format, I’d lock in a dragon deck from the beginning. The first wave of Beginner Decks in 2022 also featured a dragon deck, for what it’s worth.
That’s all to say that this deck makes perfect sense in the line-up and I’m satisfied with what it brings to the table. Which, just as a reminder, is a bunch of dragons.
If you scroll back through previous years’ worth of Commander precons, you’ll find WotC really struggling to come up with creative new names for dragon -themed precons, and Reign of Dragons is the latest entry. It gets the point across though: You’ll be playing dragons, your cards will say dragon all over them, and you’ll win by attacking with dragons. But you know what? Dragons are friggin’ cool, so you better believe I’d be snapping this one up over the others.
Lathliss, Dragon Queen reigns over the deck, an appropriately Timmy commander for a Timmy set of creatures. Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest actually seems like it could usurp the throne here, but you can kind of play whatever you want in the command zone and the deck will still play out the same. Did I mention it’s all about dragons?
I want to preserve the intent of Reign of Dragons, which is a budget-friendly, beginner-friendly Commander precon. That means I’ll avoid hyper-expensive cards as well as anything overly complex. I’m also soft-avoiding Game Changers. If you’ve got a Deflecting Swat or a Jeska's Will and you want to play it, by all means go ahead.
