I low-key hate this deck. There’s some personal bias there, since mono-green ramp and elfball-style decks just aren’t archetypes I care to play, but even aside from that I can’t get over how disappointing the name of this deck is. That might seem like a silly thing to harp on, but you shouldn’t build a beginner deck with a name that promises dinosaurs as a central theme and then have your players asking “where are all the dinosaurs?”, which I bet happens a lot here. It’s such a red herring, and it’s not like the deck we got is still something super cool. It’s just a bunch of ramp and stats. Good enough for teaching people what green does in Magic, but just misleading enough to leave a sour taste in my mouth.

It reminds me a bit of when Iconic Masters came out, and instead of the set being a museum of highly recognizable cards from Magic’s history, it was actually focused on the “iconic creature types” like sphinxes and hydras. The name just sucked, and it affected the way people engaged with the set. The same is true here, and I’m docking points heavily.

Now if you know all that and you’re still interested in what this deck offers, by all means grab a copy and enjoy. Just consider this a long-winded PSA that you’re not really getting a dinosaur deck if that’s what you’re expecting.

Despite the name, Tramplesaurus Rex is kind of just a mono-green ramp/stompy deck with a dinosaur subtheme, rather than a full-on dinosaur deck. That’s fine for that to be the gameplan of the beginner-level mono-green deck, but I’m really turned off by the name here. As a new player buying this deck, I’d expect this to be an actual dinosaur deck the same way “Reign of Dragons” is an actual dragon deck and “Calling All Angels” is all about angels. It’s slightly misleading, with only 11 dinosaurs in the deck and 0 other cards that reference dinosaurs. If you go in expecting this to be a typical mono-green ramp deck, that’s fine, but be warned that the name is slightly misleading.

That out of the way, this is the greenest deck that ever greened. It’s ramping into big creatures and hopefully trampling the opponent to death. At least the name got the trample part right. This all culminates with Ghalta, Primal Hunger as your commander.

Of all the Foundations Commander precons, this is the one most likely to teach people why commander damage still matters. Something as simple as Ghalta plus Unnatural Growth eliminates a player, so it’ll definitely have the biggest swings of the five decks.

Upgrading Tramplesaurus Rex

The deck’s game plan is fine, but its card quality is lacking. There’s random chaff I wouldn’t want in my Draft deck, let alone Commander, plus a dinosaur subtheme that doesn’t go anywhere. Also, while it printed many good green staples, a few of them don’t quite mesh with this style of green deck.
