This is a very focused, linear deck that sticks out from the rest for its go-wide gameplay, and it should play differently out of the box than any of the other options. Zombies are generally appealing to a wide enough audience that I could totally see this deck capturing new Magic players, and it hits a lot of the right notes with its synergistic lords, board wipes, and token-making effects. Not as flashy as angels or dragons, but a fun and engaging play experience all the same.
It’s zombies, y’all. Wretched Ranks goes all in digging up the undead, and it offers the best go-wide experience of the typal decks in this line-up. Instead of beating down with large flying angels and dragons, this deck wants to build up an overwhelming board of braindead bodies and run the opponents over with lords and recursion.
I roll my eyes a little at Ghoulcaller Gisa being the commander, since it’s over a decade old at this point and wasn’t even that good when it was printed back in Commander 2014. It gets the point of the deck across and is fairly straightforward for new players, but I’d be tempted to run Zul Ashur, Lich Lord as my commander instead.
Black zombie decks usually work like this: You’ll have a lot of zombies, some cards make 2/2 zombie tokens, which will often be 3/3 or higher thanks to zombie lords and other payoffs, and then some graveyard synergies or death triggers. If your zombies die, you draw more cards, fill your graveyard, get them back, or drain your opponent’s life. And if they don’t, you just attack.
