How the Manabase Calculator Works

The default settings assume your deck has an average mana curve and no specific color priorities besides your pips. If your deck has equivalent pips, but most of your 1, 2, and/or 3-drops are one particular color, you can enable that weighting under โ€œadvanced settings.โ€

It works for the three major deck sizes. 40-card is for limited, specifically Draft and Sealed, 60-card applies to Standard, Pioneer, Modern, etc, and 100-card is for Commander (EDH).

Why Would I Use a Land Calculator?

Having the correct number of lands and land ratio is critical to ensuring that you're able to play your spells on curve and without disruption. If you have an incorrect ratio, or just the wrong number of lands at all, you're much more likely to suffer from drawing too few (or too many!), not having sufficient mana for pip-heavy decks, and just not being able to cast your spells in general.

How Many Lands Should a Commander (EDH) Deck Run?

Typical Commander decks run 36-38 total lands in addition to any mana rocks, ramp, or other accelerates/sources of mana. Our app defaults to

What if I Have Multicolored Cards?

If you have multicolored cards, you should simply count the number of pips that appear on each card. You don't need to cancel them out or count anything twice. For example, if you have a Baleful Strix in your deck, it would count as one blue and one black mana.

Can I Use This Calculator for Non-Basic Lands?

Yes, you can optionally add the number of basic fetch lands in your deck, like Evolving Wilds, as well as the number of duallands to help better weigh your requirements and build your manabase.

Does Your Mana Curve Change Your Land Count?

Yes, your mana curve will change your land count (in some situations). In limited, it's generally advised that if you have fewer than cards with a mana value of five or greater, then you should run 16 lands instead of 17. It's almost never correct to run more than 17 lands in a 40-card deck.

60-card formats see greater variations. Fast-paced aggro decks may run as few as 20 lands, while midrange and control lists run closer to 24-28.

Commander decks typically have at least 35 lands, with most lists staying in the range of 36-38 land cards in the mana base. Anything fewer than 33 will make your mulligans much more difficult if your deck isn't tuned to run on low land counts.
