Walmart Offers Best Deal on Secrets of Strixhaven Codex Bundles

Secrets of Strixhaven is nearly upon us and it brings a brand new product bundle: The Codex Bundle, a collection of booster packs and promos bound up in fancy packaging reminiscent of a tome one might find in The Biblioplex.

What Does The Codex Bundle Contain?

Starting with the booster packs, the Codex Bundle contains six Play Boosters and two Collector Boosters of Secrets of Strixhaven. That’s roughly $100 in value, assuming $5 per Play Booster and $40 per Collector Booster. Actual prices flux, but that’s a safe estimate.

Additionally, the Codex Bundle contains an over-sized spindown life counter and 20 basics lands, 4 per color. These basics each highlight different parts of the Strixhaven campus. These can be pretty valuable since decks that want basics need lots of them; 4 basics won’t do much for that Giada, Font of Hope deck.

Each bundle also contains a Codex Booster with two of six foil promo cards. The possible promos are a Sol Ring depicting an archaic, a race of magical giants unique to Arcavios, or one of the enemy color Talismans, each of which have art depicting a mage from the corresponding school, with the art of all six promos done by Qistina Khalidah.

Each of these mana rocks are staples in Commander, which ought to drive plenty of demand. Strixhaven is also a fairly popular setting, which helps with the value. Any hard numbers are hard to draw, but they’ll likely be worth a few dollars unless the Bundle gets printed into the ground.

At time of writing, Codex Bundles on TCGPlayer have a high market price as $168, with ambitious listings going as high as $195. Alternatively, Walmart’s selling for $100.

The MSRP is $89.99, which all the current preorder prices exceed—which is a shame as it would be a steal. The boosters are worth more than that, the promos should add a few bucks, and the basic lands have a lot of potential if they’re exclusive to the bundle—the Pizza lands in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Bundle are $2-3 a piece. With 20 lands, that’s another $40 (potentially! Potentially) that brings the expected value closer to the lower TCGPlayer prices.

All in all, I would probably hold off on ordering on right now—preorder prices always fluctuate and tend to trend down.

Will Themed Bundles Become Commonplace?

Perhaps the most interesting part of the Codex Bundle is the trend it suggests coupled with the aforementioned Pizza Bundle, which has similar contents. The Pizza Bundle contains more boosters, with 9 Play Boosters and 1 Collector Booster versus 6 and 2, but value of the boosters is roughly equivalent. The Pizza Bundle has more lands, but all 20 for SOC are foil, etc, etc; though there are many small differences, these are still similar products.

Two products doesn’t demonstrate a pattern, but it might indicate Wizards’ interest in selling products like these in the future. At time of writing, no similar bundles have been previewed for Marvel Super Heroes, but it could only be a matter of time. These are cool products, and seeing more wouldn’t hurt things.
