Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord (Core Set 2020) โ Illustration by Chase Stone
Would it be a normal set release if there wasn't some kind of emergency ban or rebalance on Arena? Alchemy Edge of Eternities will be no different. In the most recent weekly announcements, WotC rebalanced a number of problematic combo cards, notably Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord.
Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord Changes
The primary boogeyman of this week's changes is Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord. This itteration of Sorin had an incredibly flexible combo with Saint Elenda that was hard to prevent.

It fit too easily into too many historic decks and, believe it or not, it was incredibly easy to combo off with on turn 3 and end the game. The changes WotC went with nerfed the max mana value of a vampire it can put into play. Dropping a 7-mana bomb game-winner on turn 3 was probably too good to be honest.
Other Nerfs

Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord was an incredibly strong combo piece nerfed this week, but it was far from the only one. In addition to Sorin, Cori-Steel Cutter, Awestruck Cygnet, Recruit Instructor, Housemeld, Ribald Shanty, Shellfish Scholar, Thought Rattle, and Speedbrood Stalker were all rebalanced this patch.
Cori-Steel Cutter has caused enough damage, one would think. Now it no longer gives +1/+1 and trampleโ just haste. That's a steep nerf, but with out how prominent this card became after release, WotC probably wants to shut it down for good.
Awestruck Cygnet had a nasty combo with Mockingbird, and it did so with a strong curve and early power. Opponents needed more than one removal spell to sufficiently interact, and that got it cut.
Recruit Instructor is the other big bad this time around. It was just a little too good at buffing your other mice, and now it no longer triggers off of any mice. Just itself.
Overall these rebalances were all pretty significant. Historic and Alchemy were both plagued by tons of early, efficient combos that were difficult to stop, interact with, or really play against in any way. WotC seems to be ramping up their ban hammer when it comes to digital-only formats, but after all, that's kind of the point of a digital format.

Good article. Nice to see the adjustments happen quickly. Now if we can only get them to proofread the cards before sending to the printers.
Just a little more QA is all we ask.
