Imprisoned in the Moon | Illustration by Ryan Alexander Lee
A Reddit post by u/Mysterious_Green highlighted an upcoming Moon Knight comic with a Magic: the Gathering variant cover, confirming for the first time that the character would be represented in the upcoming Marvel Super Heroes Universes Beyond set, releasing this May.
In addition to Moon Knight, variants are listed for other unconfirmed super heroes, including Deadpool (who already has a card), Knull (referenced in Grendel, Spawn of Knull in Marvelโs Spider-Man) and the Punisher.
What Are These Comic Variants?
These listings are not for Magic cards; these are preorders for Marvel comics with a Magic variant cover, so a cover thatโs different than the base cover for the issue in question.
This isnโt the first time weโve seen these. Wolverine and Storm got the variant treatment back in 2024 when the Marvel Secret Lair drop introduced five legendary Marvel commanders. These variants used the art from the card plus the text box, and were handed out at New York Comic Con, 2024:

In addition to confirming characters who will appear in MSH, these variants include information about the artists drawing at least one version of the card (assuming these variants are identical to the 2024 formula). For example, Moon Knightโs art comes from illustrator Chris Bachalo, one of the best-known comic book illustrators, which could indicate that this illustration will be on a premium version of the card.
Now that we know Moon Knightโs coming to Magic, we have to wonder: what will the card be like?
Who Is Moon Knight?
Speculating on the card begins with understanding the character Moon Knight, otherwise known as Marc Spector. A mercenary with dissociative identity disorder, Spector was left for dead after a mission in the desert and got resurrected by Konshu, the moon god. After, he became a hero patrolling New York and protecting those who travel at night, with a distinct focus on vengeance and an anti-hero streakโIโve seen him dubbed โMarvelโ Batmanโ from time to time.
From these details, we can speculate on a few aspects a Moon Knight card, like color and type. โAnti-heroโ screams Orzhov (), with a sense of justice (white) clashing with brutal, methods of enacting it (black). This would be similar to some Sorin cards, like Sorin, Solemn Visitor. Moon Knight will be legendary, of course, with human and hero as given type. I imagine weโll see a third type to represent Marcโs connection to Konshu. Cleric would be the most natural choice as he serves the god; this too would fit within black-white since most clerics fall in those colors. Depending on how Wizards wants to depict him, avatar could be a possibility, but that seems much less likely.
Getting at the text box requires a consideration of his powers; keeping in line with the Batman parallel, Moon Knight doesnโt have many powers, relying on a mastery of weaponry and close combat gained from years spent in the military and working as a mercenary. That suggests modification; Moon Knight could care about equipment or +1/+1 counters (or other counters). Both express the idea of weaponry. Given that death and resurrection is crucial to his story, a to recur or reanimate Moon Knight seems plausible. Undying might be too on the nose, but I find it hard to believe a character whose origin starts with rising from the dead would stay in the graveyard for very long.
