Reddit user no_oxygen_required posted leaks of both Lowryn Eclipsed precon commanders, debuting a brand-new Jund () -1/-1 counter commander and a five-color () elemental-typal commander weeks ahead of their scheduled previews.

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch

Auntie Ool, Cursewretch leads the Blight Curse deck. Itโ€™s a legendary goblin warlock with a unique ward cost of blight 2 (a brand-new mechanic for Lorwyn Eclipsed that makes players put -1/-1 counters on their creatures) and a powerful payoff for putting -1/-1 counters on creatures, either as card draw or life loss, depending on which player controls the creature.

This commander has a clever design that marries together all forms of -1/-1 counter synergies. The mechanic appears rarely, and its cards can be grouped into two categories: Those from Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation that put -1/-1 counters on your creatures (Channeler Initiate, Ammit Eternal), and more intuitive payoffs for putting them on opposing creatures (Massacre Girl, Known Killer, Blowfly Infestation[/card]). Since Auntie Ool rewards the pilot for placing -1/-1 on creatures controlled by any player, albeit in different forms, all these cards are viable. Itโ€™s also important to note that Auntie Ool doesnโ€™t care which players put the counters on creatures, so it works with blight.

Jund colors are perfect, not just for -1/-1 counters themselves (an archetype highly concentrated in Golgari () colors) but adjacent synergies. Black offers access to strong death triggers that reward the player for devastating opposing boards (Blood Artist, Judith, the Scourge Diva), which pair well with green proliferate effects (Evolution Sage, Unnatural Restoration) to get the job done. Red provides access to potent goblin token producers (Krenko, Mob Boss, Goblin Rabblemaster) so you have even more bodies in put -1/-1 counters on, thus drawing more cards.

Ashling, the Limitless

Ashling, the Limitless leads the Dance of the Elements precon. Itโ€™s a legendary elemental sorcerer that only cost . but has a five-color identity thanks to its textbox, which gives all your elementals evoke and copies nontoken elementals when they die, creating a hasty token that must be sacrificed on the next end step unless you pay .

What Ashling lacks in versatility when compared to Auntie Ool, it makes up for in sheer power, as this might be one of the strongest elemental payoffs ever. Giving them evoke represents a huge mana discount on creatures like Avenger of Zendikar, Maelstrom Wanderer, and Nyxbloom Ancient. It pairs especially well with elementals that have enters abilities, since the evoked card will be sacrificed, then another token madeโ€”thatโ€™s two Avenger of Zendikar triggers for four generic mana. Since the token sticks around until the end step, it also works with elementals that have static abilities that require additional game actions, like attacking or landfall. Itโ€™s an incredibly powerful commander when played straight and narrowโ€”but thereโ€™s no reason for that.

The Scam archetype refers to decks built around evoking creatures, then using flicker effects (Ephemerate or cards that return a dead creature to play (Malakir Rebirth, Reanimate) to get the evoked creature into play permanently, often retriggering an enters effect along the way. Though the archetype got its name from a Modern deck that abused Grief, Ashling allows players to scam their LGS with any elemental, from the humble Risen Reef to the colossal Nyxbloom Ancient.

Additionally, Ashling works as sneaky board protection. The ability isnโ€™t restricted, so sacrifice outlets like Ashnod's Altar can create a token copy of key pieces targeted by removal like Swords to Plowshares. Since you donโ€™t need to pay until your next end step, you get at least a turn with your valuable elementals, or force your opponents to burn multiple removal spells on a single target. Either option is valuable for you.

Both Auntie Ool, Cursewretch and Ashling, the Limitless appear to be incredibly powerful yet novel commanders that capitalize on niche synergies in unique and exciting ways. If this it what the precon commanders have in store for us, the set itself promises to be a treat.
