Wanna get ready to play ONE? Check out our Limited set review and Ultimate Sealed and Draft guides!
The third installment to the four-set Phyrexian story arc sees our heroes return to New Phyrexia in Phyrexia: All Will Be One. The poison counters we’ve seen hinted at since Kaldheim are returning to Standard in full force, and that’s not the only callback we’ll see with this release.
Retro-frame promotional cards, a new Jumpstart set, and that final Phyrexian Praetor we’ve been missing are all in store. Let’s take a look at everything this set has to offer!

About the Set: The Story
Sheoldred, the Apocalypse | Illustration by Chris Rahn
At Wizards Presents 2022, host Jimmy Wong hinted that our villains were growing ever stronger in Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Wong confirmed we’ll revisit the “terrifying and beautiful plane” of New Phyrexia where Elesh Norn rules. She inches ever closer in her plan to conquer the universe, and terror and oil ooze from every corner of the plane.
Wong promised we’ll experience the fear (and joy) of becoming One. He also said horror fans won’t be disappointed.
Set Mechanics
Phyrexia: All Will Be One features the return of poison counters and debuts some new mechanics alongside them.
Poison Counters
The infamous poison counters have been an alternate win condition in Magic since the beginning, way back in 1994’s Legends. Players get poison counters through a variety of effects, but a player with 10 or more loses the game.
Toxic
Toxic, a mechanic new to this set, is deliberately weaker than infect, which turns all damage into an equal amount of poison counters. Slowing poison down to a fixed amount for each instance of damage may be the balance that the mechanic needs. That being said, it's still a powerful mechanic, especially when printed on the right cards.
Proliferate
Proliferate is an iconic Phyrexian ability, so it's no surprise to see it in Phyrexia: All Will Be One. When triggered it lets you place another counter of any kind already present on any number of permanents or players. Infamously combined with infect, you can quickly poison your opponent to death in a single turn.
Oil Counters
Sawblade Scamp was the first leaked card to reference “oil counters.” From what we've seen, the power of oil counters is highly dependent on card quality, and not the mechanic itself. We've seen charge counters and the like, so this is really nothing new.
Corrupted
Playing off the poison counters theme, corrupted abilities can only be activated if an opponent has three or more poison counters. Sinew Dancer was the first Phyrexia: All Will Be One spoiler with corrupted. It’s reminiscent of New Phyrexia’s Blinding Souleater and gets a three-mana discount on its tap ability once you’ve got your opponent looking nice and sickly.

LGS Exclusive: Phyrexian Click-Wheel
Starting on March 3, you can get a nifty little Phyrexian click-wheel if you spend $75 or more on Sealed MTG products at your local WPN game store. I think this is a great start for promos to help increase patronage at game stores, and I hope Wizards does more of this in the future.
Maybe something a little more than an (admittedly cool-looking) plastic life/poison counter, though? Or a bit lower threshold than $75. I guess we'll see how this one turns out!
Wrap Up
Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur | Illustration by Eric Deschamps
If you played during Scars of Mirrodin’s Standard back in 2010 then you know the reign of terror that infect decks had on the meta. Love it or hate it, it was an exciting time.
Looking back, I miss the puzzle that mechanics like poison present to players and am excited to see it given another shot in Phyrexia: All Will Be One. I hope I don’t eat my words as the Standard metagame shifts!
What do you think? Are you excited to play some toxic creatures, or are you dreading the return of poison counters? Let me know in the comments or over on Draftsim’s Twitter.
That’s all from me for now. Stay safe, stay healthy, and wash your hands!
