Summon: G.F. Ifrit (Final Fantasy) โ art by Lordigan
Nothing like a great comeback to make a gripping story. And this week we have not one but two of those in the MTG card market.
After dropping like stones from their pre-order prices (like it's the case for most cards from all sets; such is the eternal cycle of hype!), two saga creatures from Final Fantasy x MTG have rebounded from their rock-bottom lows and regained an impressive 250% since last week:
Summon: Yojimbo and Summon: Ixion, two white enchantment creatures from the Counter Blitz Commander precon, show remarkably similar trajectories. From pre-release prices of about $20, they immediately dropped to around $2-$4 as soon as Final Fantasy released. Yet as Commander players realized how good these two cards are, they have rallied upwards to about $10 in the case of Summon: Ixion, almost back to $20 in Summon: Yojimboโs case.
The Return of Saga Creatures

The first to turn back the page into a new chapter was Summon: Yojimbo, a four-mana saga creature that, after spending a couple of weeks hovering at around $3, started getting traction about a week ago โ even drying up the inventories in some Magic card markets.

Unlike a ton of similar โExile on ETBโ effects that pretty much every set has in white, the exiled permanent does not return when Summon: Yojimbo leaves the battlefield. It doesn't work with any target (and in particular doesn't work with untapped creatures, which is a fairly big downside), but whatever you exile with Yojimbo stays exiled for good. And something similar happens with its second chapter: the effect lasts until your next turn, so even if some of your foes points the business end of Boseiju, Who Endures at it and kills your Yojimbo, they still have to pay per creature to attack you.
The other white saga creature with a crazy rebound this week is Summon: Ixion:

Summon: Ixionโs price curve is similar to Yojimbo's, but a lot more abrupt: this 3-mana enchantment creature started spiking two days ago. Ixion's exile effect is much more common, liberating the exiled creature once Ixion leaves the battlefield, but the brief respite and the extra tokens more than make up for it.
Why Are These White Saga Creatures Spiking?
For starters, both Summon: Yojimbo and Summon: Ixion are very good with their designated commander, Tidus, Yuna's Guardian โ all three cards are part of the Counter Blitz Commander precon from Final Fantasy.

They remain a popular trio in casual Commander decks, with around half of Tidus decks playing at least one of the white enchantments. And the trio has shown some early success in cEDH, with Tidus, Yuna's Guardian and Yuna, Grand Summoner decks showing up with both Yojimbo and Ixion in their list.
But, interestingly, the saga creatures seem more popular than their face commander: There are about 7,000 decks that include Tidus either in the command zone or in the 99, whereas there's more than 10,000 decks that put Summon: Yojimbo to good use.
In particular, it's another Final Fantasy commander that's driving the biggest share of demand:

Terra, Magical Adept, the face commander from another Final Fantasy precon, is making Summon: Yojimbo close to an auto-include in her decks. And, for both saga creatures, you'll find them in more Terra decks than Tidus decks.
If you've bought Tidus deck and were not entirely convinced about how useful these saga creatures are, perhaps take a second look at them โ or even consider having them switch to the Terra team!
