This weekโ€™s Magic market had a new main character: Secrets of Strixhavenโ€˜s newly revealed Silverquill Commander precon built around Killian, Decisive Mentor sent auras and synergy pieces climbing.

Premodern keeps doing its usual thing, though, and pushed up yet another oldie.

Let's check what went up big, and why!

Nurgleโ€™s Rot

Nurgle's Rot

Warhammer 40Kโ€˜s Nurgle's Rot is not the biggest price spike this weekโ€ฆ but it's the poster child of what's going on with several cards.

In the last seven days, the price of near-mint copies sold in the US market went up by about 30%, from $10 to $13; but the interesting story happened back in early February. Nurgle's Rot was never a zero, but it went to hero overnight back then (a huge 400% in week!)โ€ฆ

โ€ฆ and in both cases the reason is the same: The upcoming Silverquill Commander precon, with Killian, Decisive Mentor as the face commander.

Silverquill Commander precon

Nurgle's Rot first, massive spike happened right when Killian, Decisive Mentor was revealed. And now, with the full Silverquill Commander precon revealed, this black aura is getting a nice second wind.

As we reported back then, the synergy is pretty straightforward: Goaded creatures must attack if able, which makes them all the more likely to dieโ€ฆ which is exactly what Nurgle's Rot needs to trigger. And on top of that, Killian also lets you draw a card whenever one or more creatures that are enchanted by an aura you control attack.

While Nurgle's Rot, some other cards are having their first (and huge!) push!

But with the Silverquill Commander precon fully revealed, aura-matters cards are in much demand:

Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice saw a massive spike in demand on April 1st, when the precon was revealed. Printed only in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty and a Secret Lair, near-mint copies more than tripled in price during this week (from about $1 to more than $3). Currently copies are listed at about $5 or more when you include shipping, and some Magic players on the MTG finance subreddit are guessing it may go even higher than that.

โ€œIt is a โ€œfirst includeโ€ card for the deck, which should drive a ton of demand,โ€ notes u/PwneeHS.

Here's another slam-dunk inclusion with the new Silverquill Commander precon: like Nurgle's Rot, Eye of Nidhogg comes back to hand when it goes to your graveyard, and it even reinforces Killian's โ€œLet's Goad' Emโ€ theme.

Content creators were quick to highlight Eye of Nidhogg as an obvious card for Killian, and traded copies have quadrupled in price since the precon was revealed:ย

And the tendency seems to continue: At the time of writing, near-mint copies in the US market are listed at $5 and above.

Spiritual Focus

Spiritual Focus

Spiritual Focus is your weekly reminder that, yeah, new MTG sets and their Commander precons are nice and all, but have you seen Premodern?

If you've been paying attention to the MTG card market you know this by now, but in case you weren't: For a couple of months, not a week goes by without a Premodern staple going sky-high. It's nearly always circumscribed to the original version (Premodern does allow all tournament legal pre- and reprints from the legal sets, but Premodern players clearly prefer the originals).

This week's representative, Spiritual Focus sees absolutely no play in Commanderโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ but being a staple in Replenish decks in Premodern has pushed its price from less than $1 to around $2.50. And the Mercadian Masques original is the only printing in this case, so there's no discrepancy between different versions!
