Daxos, the Returned | Illustration by Adam Paquette
The Magic card market has been a bit quiet this week; perhaps the calm after the Secrets of Strixhaven release, and before the next wave of previews from heroes and hobbits starts in earnest.
It's still Secrets of Strixhaven behind the biggest movers this week, so let's find out what's up!
Daxos the Returned
Daxos the Returned spike isโฆ a bit off, to be honest. Daxos has zero competitive punch in 60-card formats, and has never been too popular in casual Commander. At first glance, youโd think this spike has to be tied to Killian, Decisive Mentor, given the explicit enchantment synergyโฆ but, by and large, Killian decks don't seem too interested in Daxos: the inclusion rate is way below 10% according to EDHREC, which is not exactly auto-include.
Still, near-mint copies traded in the US market went from about $12 to $16 over the last seven days, and at the time of writing, listed prices are roughly twice as high as that, making it one of the biggest spikes this week.

So whatโs going on?
The best explanation is probably (lack of) supply. There are a lot of Killian, Decisive Mentor decks out there, since heโs the face commander of one of the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander precon deck. And supply is really thin in this case: Outside of The List, Daxos the Returned has never been reprinted since the original Commander 2015 release, and at the time of writing, there were just about a dozen copies listed on TCGplayer.
With such a scarce supply, even a modest increase in demand could explain the price spikeโฆ but do make sure your Killian deck really wants Daxos in it, if you're thinking about buying a copy!
The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride
The regular version of The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride had a huge week, going from about $2.30 to $6.60 for near-mint copies in the US market. That now puts the regular version at roughly the same price as the borderless version, which is also up a bit since last Friday.

The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride was already a fairly popular Golgari commander in its own right, and it only has a single printing from Outlaws of Thunder Junction. And now itโs also getting pushed as an upgrade for Witherbloom Pestilence, Dina, Essence Brewerโs precon deck.
Something similar is happening with Savra, Queen of the Golgari, by the way: Savra's a fairly competent Golgari commander by itself, and is now seeing some upward action thanks to Dina, although its price has not (yet?) spiked as hard as the Gitrog's.
Sphere of Safety
Now hereโs a card Killian, Decisive Mentor definitely likes!
Sphere of Safety is an enchantment that rewards you for playing more enchantments, which is exactly where Killian, Decisive Mentor wants to be. Itโs also just a brutal defensive tool in Commander, making it harder and harder for opponents to attack you as your board develops.
Sphere of Safety was already strong enough to see some cEDH play, and now has found its way into nearly half of Killian decks.

This is one precon upgrade that Magic players saw coming, so the price increase has been steady rather than a sudden spike. But, slowly and surely, Sphere of Safety has roughly doubled in price in the last couple of months, with a clear trend across its printings.
