The biggest Magic event of the year is happening in just two weeks, and there are still surprises being announced for attendees. The latest news is a pair of promos that will be given to players who sign up for any Final Fantasy-themed side event at MagicCon Las Vegas. The first is a beloved and heavily-played staple, and the other isโ€ฆ not really a Magic card at all! Don't worry, it's not a Final Fantasy-themed pencil.

More Final Fantasy Mash-Ups

The promos in question are a pair of twins from Final Fantasy XIV, one depicting Alisaie Leveilleur on a Swords to Plowshares reprint, the other being an illustration of Alphinaud Leveilleur on a Final Fantasy TCG card. That's right, one of the promos isn't even a Magic card, but participants at these events will receive both. And each one shares half an illustration by Kodai Okomoto. Perhaps that's what happens when you cast Saw in Half on a Moogle.

This announcement comes courtesy of Wizards of the Coast, who found themselves in tepid water just this week for announcing one of the most disappointing Region Championship Qualifier promos ever to grace the hands of competitive Magic players. Granted, this Final Fantasy mash-up will be gifted to MagicCon side event attendees, not RCQ competitors, but this participation promo is somehow a much better and much more playable card than Laughing Jasper Flint. At least, the Magic card is. You're on your own with Alphinaud.

If you plan on hitting the tournament circuit any time this summer, you'll have a couple opportunities to pick up this pair of Final Fantasy siblings.

MagicCon Vegas will be your first chance, running from June 20-22 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. You'll need to register for a side event using Final Fantasy products, and that's it, the twins are yours! Two-Headed Giant and Team Limited events will also suffice if you want to buddy up with someone and still get these promos. The Swords to Plowshares at this event will be in English.

If you're up for a little travel, your second opportunity will be in Chiba, Japan for Magic Spotlight: Final Fantasy, taking place June 27-29. The promos will be specifically linked to a Team Limited Open that Sunday, though some side events may also reward the cards. Notably, the Swords to Plowshares for this even will be in Japanese.

The promo announcement comes as a surprise, given how much collaboration there's already been for the MTG x Final Fantasy crossover, which includes a main set release, four Commander decks with premium versions, and three individual Secret Lairs. The FF-TCG promo is reminiscent of a Black Lotus crossover card that was created specifically for Duel Masters back in 2022, another card game developed by Wizards of the Coast. The Leveilleurs may not be quite as high-profile (they haven't even been physically released yet), but as a wise Commander player once said: You can never have too many Swords to Plowshares.
