This morning's scheduled banned and restricted announcement had some big surprises for Modern. One of the biggest surprises among them was the unbanning of a card that has spent 15 whole years on the ban list: Umezawa's Jitte
The Jitte

Umezawa's Jitte has been banned since the inception of the Modern format, and for good reason. You'll know what I mean if you've had the displeasure of playing against this card on Arena in the powered cube, or even in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles where it appeared on the bonus sheet. For the unacquainted, Umezawa's Jitte is a card that quickly makes every decision into a math problem and will often win you the game if left unanswered. Because it gets two counters whenever the equipped creature deals combat damageโto anything, not just a playerโand its activated ability can be used at instant-speed, it means that connecting even once means you now have a huge amount of leverage over your opponent. When even the threat of activating is enough to force your opponent to play differently, it makes for a game that will continue to turn in your favor especially as you attack again and get more counters on the jitte.
Good Enough For Modern?

This seems like a very oppressive gameplay pattern, and it is, so why unban it? The simple answer is that Modern is a powerful format that can handle powerful cards like Umezawa's Jitte. Some decks will win before it matters, and others will have ways to deal with it. There are also some inherent weaknesses with equipment in general in more powerful formats like Modern. You are spending mana to cast it, then you are spending more mana to equip it, and you have to have a creature on board already to equip it to, and if your opponent kills it in response then you've spent a lot of mana to do nothing, which is not a recipe for success. There are ways to make equipment based strategies viable, namely Stoneforge Mystic, which adds a lot of consistency to these types of decks, but it does not fix the fundamental problem.
Finding A Home

Here's another question: What deck wants to play this card? Deck lists are tight in Modern and most decks won't even want to play Umezawa's Jitte, and the ones that do will only have so much room for a legendary equipment. The most likely scenario for this card is that it will end up as a one-of toolbox piece that you can get with Stoneforge Mystic, but it's not like there are a lot of tier one decks currently playing Stoneforge Mystic anyways. We haven't really seen an equipment deck be a pillar of the format since Colossus Hammer and Sigarda's Aid were doing their thing in the hammertime decks.
It's possible that the unbanning of Umezawa's Jitte breathes some new life into strategies like hammertime or more value focused Stoneforge Mystic decks. The ceiling is very high when you can consistently get the Jitte in play and stack counters on it, and if there is a deck that can make that happen, then that's great. However, that deck does not exist at the moment, and it's a real possibility that it won't exist simply because the format has moved past an era where a card like Umezawa's Jitte can be good.
Wrap Up

So what does an equipment need to do to be good in Modern? Not every equipment can be Cori-Steel Cutter. Ultimately, Umezawa's Jitte is the kind of card that is at its most powerful in a vacuum, but as the format has evolved to become faster and more interactive, the pressure has increased and the value that it can provide to a deck is diminished. That's not to say it's bad. This card will still beat you and make you groan and whine and lament its existence when it works. But it won't always work, and most decks won't bother with it and will probably be better off for it. All of that being said, I think it certainly has a chance. It's just a powerful card, and sometimes that's all a card needs to be. And even if it's not well positioned now, that doesn't mean it won't be in the future. Metas shift, things change, and it's good to know that even if you might not always want it, Umezawa's Jitte is an option.
