Listen up, students! Secrets of Strixhaven is almost here, and with a brand new set comes brand new combos to destroy your friends with in EDH. While playing a long fair game of back and forth magic is nice, there has always been something so romantic about pulling off an infintie comboโ€“an intricate performance where the cards and the mechanics are the actors, and the players become the audienceโ€“of course, when a combo goes infinite, the audience doesn't last long. So it's in that spirit of peformance and utter annihiliation that I present a combo for the ages. And who better to be at its helm than the Prismari performer herself: Rootha.

Rootha, Mastering the Moment

Rootha, Mastering the Moment is one of the five new precon face commanders being released as part of the Secrets of Strixhaven commander set. While they all stand out in their own way, Rootha offers something special: It's blue and red, which means it gets to make comboing off look easy. That's nice, but there are lots of izzet commanders out there, so what makes this one so special? How about that fact that it's part of a combo that's about as close to Modern Splinter Twin/Kiki-Jiki decks as you can get in commander.

Breath of Fury, meet ham sandwich.

So here's the combo:

  1. You play Rootha, Mastering the Moment. It shouldn't be that difficult, after all, it is your commander.
  2. Have another creature on the board that can attack, again, not terribly difficult to do. It can be anything from Gingerbrute to Draco, as long as it can attack through for damage.
  3. Play Breath of Fury on that creature.
  4. You also have to cast an instant or sorcery spell this turn, as this will trigger rootha's ability. You're playing blue and red, so it should be doable.
  5. You're all set, just attack with the enchanted creature and deal combat damage to an opponent, then the magic happens.

Breath of Fury will give you an extra combat and attach to the elemental that rootha made. That elemental has haste and so it will attack and hit an oppoent, then you get an extra combat, which triggers rootha again to make another token, which breath of fury attaches to, and so on and so forth until you've taken as many combats as you like and your opponents are dead as can be. (assuming they can't block your fliers.)

Now it may seem a bit clunky, but never underestimate how big of an advantage it is to have a combo piece in your command zone. It's a card you will always have access to, and therefore it reduces the number of things you need to draw to achieve the combo. Really, all you need is Breath of Fury, as you will likely just have a creature, and you will likely just cast an instant or sorcery, as these are things decks just do. As for finding the combo card, blue and red are lacking in ways to tutor for enchantments, but they are not lacking in ways to draw cards, and if you cast spells like Brainstorm and Faithless Looting enough times, you'll usually get what you need. Now, nothing is garunteed in this deck, and it's not a true two-card combo, but it's very close and it seems like it can serve as a very functional piece of a very competitive Bracket 3 EDH deck, and the best part is that it only has to take up a single slot in the 99, which leaves room for other kinds of game-winning combos. At any rate, it's certainly fun and it's definitely spectacular.
