Star Trek is almost here, and it’s already bringing us a lot of cool new toys. The Commander cards are sweet, and it looks like Draft is going to be fun, but for the second set in a row, something has happened that might make you lose (or win) a game out of nowhere. I don’t think anyone expected it, but they’re giving us a two card combo that you can potentially pull off at your prerelease, and it actually seems really busted.

The Combo

The Combo needs two cards: Make It So and Spock, Strangely Human. With the Spock, Strangely Human in play, all you need to do is to cast at least two spells, it doesn’t matter what they are. Once you have, you can cast Make It So, choosing the first mode and targeting Spock, Strangely Human to untap, and your opponent to draw two cards.

While that spell is on the stack, you’re going to tap and activate Spock, Strangely Human, copying Make It So. The copy will also target Spock, Strangely Human and your opponent. Once the copy resolves, it will make your opponent draw two cards and it will untap Spock, Strangely Human, but the original spell is still on the stack, meaning you can tap and activate the copy ability again targeting that spell, repeating the process.

Each loop of this combo makes your opponent draw two cards, and this will make them draw their entire deck and cause them to lose the game. Pretty cool, right?

The hard part about combos is actually putting them together. Especially in Draft or Sealed where you can’t guarantee which cards are in your deck, it becomes almost impossible to get a combo like this going. Spock, Strangely Human is incredibly rare, as it and all the other Stardates cards will be appearing less often than special guests normally do, which is already so low it’s basically irrelevant.

And if you do manage to actually open one, you have to have Make It So, which is only a common so you can probably get it, but it’s not a guarantee. Assuming you’re able to get a deck with these cards in it, and ideally more than one copy of Make It So, then you have to actually do it.

You need to draw both cards, play Spock, Strangely Human, have it survive a turn, then you need to play two random spells, which is a lot easier said than done as most of the time you won’t have the mana available to cast multiple spells plus Make It So, or you won’t have spells in your hand to cast.

Assuming you do all of that, you cast Make It So, you still have to hope your opponent doesn’t have removal or a counter spell to interrupt it. But if all goes to plan, you win!

Wrap Up

Overall, combos like these that you can potentially pull off at a Prerelease are often little more than pipedreams. The chances of you having these cards are a bit too narrow to really think about, and even if you do put it together, there are still hurdles in your way before you can actually win.

That being said, just the idea that a combo like this is possible in Limited is exciting. We don’t get them often, but when we do it’s fun to hear people’s stories about how they actually managed to do it, or conversely, how they were about to win until their opponent got the combo win out of nowhere. What do you think about this combo? Will you be trying to make it happen once Star Trek comes out?
