Lorwyn Eclipsed is still in the oven, and yet we already have a first peek at Secrets of Strixhaven. An unofficial peek, mind you, as pics of an unfinished Commander precon have started circulating. Those pics give us a first taste of what to expect from April's in-universe MTG set, and we even got a look at some new-to-Magic Commander cards in the bunch.

Hot Off the Presses

Il_Vero_Pillz on Reddit reposted images from another user, PM_pics_of_your_roof (great name), which showed off some printing pages from the upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven set. These all appear to be from a UR Commander precon, and include some familiar faces first-time prints as well. There's also a little bit of information that can be gleaned from the fine print.

Starting from top left to bottom right, we can see the following cards (*denotes new-to-Magic cards):

From just these rares alone, it's evident that we'll see a traditional Izzet spellslinger deck, with what seems to be token and high mana value themes, reminiscent of Zaffai, Thunder Conductor from our last visit to the school. Of note, the magecraft ability doesn't appear on either of the two fully-visible new cards, despite them both triggering off casting instants/sorceries. That might be an indication that magecraft won't be returning in this set, or that they just didn't want these cards to trigger off copying spells, and left magecraft off for that reason.

You can also pick up some other tidbits of information here. The set symbolโ€˜s on display, and as some redditors have pointed out, the collector numbers line up in such a way that it appears as though there will be five Commander precons with this set, which makes perfect sense.

Value Reprints

The portion of the deck that's visible in these pictures only includes rares, but there are a few spicy ones in there.

Goldspan Dragonโ€˜s a great Commander card, and sits around $10 right now, having also been reprinted in a Modern Horizons 3 Commander deck. Brazen Borrowerโ€˜s a solid $3-4, and I was surprised that Twinflame has a market price of about $6.

Archmage Emeritus and Dance with Calamity also have a pricetag of about $2, and they're both casual Commander mainstays.

I'm especially happy to see Fabled Passage here. It ranges from $4-7 depending on the printing, but it's a card that could stand to show up in more precons as an improved Evolving Wilds. Precons have gotten more expensive, but the manabases are always so lackluster, and any upgrades to precon mana are a welcome addition, even if it's weird to do this in 2-color decks. Note that Passage was reprinted in an Edge of Eternities precon last year.

We go back to the world of pretending Izzet is called โ€œPrismariโ€ when Secrets of Strixhaven releases in April, 2026. If this leak and some of the other โ€œhexhavenโ€ leaks are any hint, we might end up seeing a bit more of this set before we're really meant to.
