This weekend, a unique card was unveiled on LinkedIn by Dave Moccia: Mr. Monopoly, On the Go, a mono-red planeswalker with the staggering ability to create 200 Treasure tokens.

The unique planeswalker is part of the Heroes of the Realm series, a rare and highly valuable series of cards similar to Un-set cards that bend the rules of what Magic cards get to do; Mr. Monopoly here is the newest edition. As unique as these cards are, Mr. Monopoly gets an extra bump of uniqueness as the only Heroes of the Realm card to depict a non-Magic character.

To be clear, Mr. Monopoly, On the Go is not a tournament-legal Magic card, as it has a unique card back exclusive to Heroes of the Realm cards. If you were to play itโ€ฆwell, letโ€™s think about it. While the ultimate is extremely enticing, itโ€™s also pretty hard to reach. -40 for 200 Treasure likely wins if you hit it, and itโ€™s extremely flavorfulโ€”you need to cross 40 squares to circle a Monopoly board and cross go. But it takes forever to reach the ultimate.

Most of the playability is in the uptick, which rolls a d6 to see how much loyalty Mr. Monopoly gets. Itโ€™s another flavorful ability, though Iโ€™d rather have more consistency when trying to reach 40. Still, itโ€™s probably the strongest ability on the red planeswalker because itโ€™s a consistent source of dice rolling for commanders like Mr. House, President and CEO or Wyll, Blade of Frontiers. That gives it a narrow but meaningful range; Magic has very few die rolling cards.

But, all things considered, this isnโ€™t a Magic card for playing. Like the other Heroes of the Realm cards that have been printed sporadically since 2019, this is a commemorative art piece more than a game piece. Thatโ€™s also why Mr. Monopoly is the first non-Magic HotR card: the card was gifted to Moccia for his work on Monopoly GO!, which Wizards of the Coast manages for Hasbro.

Understanding Heroes of the Realm

If you never heard of Heroes of the Realm prior to Mr. Monopoly hitting social media, you arenโ€™t alone; most players have never heard of it, largely because Heroes of the Realm cards arenโ€™t commercial products. These are commemorative cards Wizards gifts in-house to reward teams doing exceptional work. While they never strayed beyond the confines of Wizardโ€™s IP until Mocciaโ€™s card, theyโ€™re often rather tongue in cheek when referring to the team they recognize:

Dungeon Master dropped in 2019 for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition, War of the Spark commemorated the set of the same name, which represented the culmination of a major story arc, and Keeper of the Secret Lair, of course, went to the Secret Lair team.

Not every Heroes of the Realm card is so direct, however:

Champions of Archery went to the team working on Throne of Eldraine, Ersta, Friend to All was for the HR team, and Svega, the Unconventional was for community outreach staff who helped with conventions and the like in 2022.

Another commonality of these cards are their unique mechanics that break the rules of Magic to highlight whatever theyโ€™re meant to commemorate, much like Un-set cards. Yet another thing they have in common is extreme rarity. Because these cards are printed in such small numbers, the few copies that sneak into the secondary market are incredibly expensive. For example, Chandra, Gremlin Wrangler has a single listing on TCGplayer for $75,000, and War of the Sparkโ€™s two listings are $12,000 and $25,000, respectively; these are some of the rarest Magic cards in the world.
