Gleaming Splendor | Illustration by Kekai Kotaki

Commander staples are nice, but what about staples that also enable game winning combos? Well, it looks like Gleaming Splendor from The Hobbit is exactly what you've been looking for. This is because, in conjunction with its best friend Smothering Tithe, there are some absolutely nasty combos you can get up to with it in Commander.

The Combos

The best part about this combo is that there are so many ways you can go with it. Gleaming Splendor and Smothering Tithe are the non-negotiables, but you want to play these cards in most decks anyway, as their effects are just generally helpful in any game of Commander.

Then simply add the special sauce and suddenly the combo comes to lifeโ€“token doublers are a great option for this. Anointed Procession, Mondrak, Glory Dominus, and Elspeth, Storm Slayer will all work without making you even have to stretch outside of white.

With one of these in play alongside Gleaming Splendor and Smothering Tithe the combo goes as follows: Activate Gleaming Splendor, targeting two opponents who are tapped out. They will each draw a card, triggering Smothering Tithe. Ideally they can't pay the 2, so you get to create a treasure token for each. Except because of your token doubler, you make four treasures instead. Sacrific three of those treasures to activate Gleaming Splendor again and repeat the process until your opponents draw their whole decks and you've won the game.

If your opponents aren't tapped out, don't worry, you'll just need to have some more mana. Luckily, Gleaming Splendor and Smothering Tithe will give you some free mana as they stick around without you having to do much work for it, so it makes the combo just that much easier to achieve.

Other Options

If your deck can branch outside of just white, you have some other options for more redundancy. Xorn, Goldspan Dragon, and Zirda, the Dawnwaker are all good options in red that achieve the combo. Xorn is just a more narrow token doubler that only doubles treasures, but that's enough in this case. Goldspan Dragon similarly doubles your mana from treasures rather than doubling the number of them, but it has the same result. Zirda, the Dawnwaker simply reduces the cost of activating Gleaming Splendor to a single mana, and it has the upside of being a potential commander, making the combo just that much easier to achieve consistently.

There are a myriad of other token doublers which I won't list all of because there are so many of them, just know that there are other options for this deck depending on what colors you are in.

Aside from that, there is another similar combo that utilizes just Gleaming Splendor in combination with Mind Over Matter and anything that can tap for at least three mana such as a Gilded Lotus or Lotus Field to continually activate Gleaming Splendor, discarding the card you drew from it to untap your mana producer to repeat the process. To prevent yourself from drawing your entire deck, you can include something like Kozilek, Butcher of Truth to shuffle your graveyard back into your library when you discard it, ensuring that your opponents will draw their whole deck before you do, winning you the game.

Wrap Up

Gleaming Splendor really is the real deal. It's a card that's excellent on its own, providing you treasures and utility for cheap, and then when the stars align, it's a game winning combo machine. Very rarely do we get cards that do both of these things so efficiently, and I wouldn't be surprised if Gleaming Splendor became a widely played staple, popping up in every white deck that can run it. Because after all, what deck wouldn't want this? Overall, it's a welcome addition to the Commander format. Will you be running this card in your deck, or perhaps any of these combos?
