Final Fantasy x MTG is finally here! Well, it's being previewed at least, and you know Wizards of the Coast has a lot of eggs in this basket since we're getting these previews before Tarkir Dragonstorm, which is technically the next major set to release. But who has time for MTG dragons and clans when there are actual, literal Final Fantasy summons in the game now?
Introducing Summon: Shiva

In today's WeeklyMTG stream on Twitch, members of the Final Fantasy x MTG design team showcased plenty of new cards and mechanics from the upcoming summer set, with our first peek at Magic's rendition of summons! Depending on the game in question, these are referred to as eidolons, espers, aeons, and so on, but it seems like they'll be referred to broadly as Summons by name only.
The interesting part? Look at that typeline! Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty introduced us to sagas that transform into creatures, but this is the first time we've seen creature and saga on the same typeline. Summon: Shiva in particular comes from Final Fantasy X (noted by the game code in the bottom left corner), and showcases exactly what to expect from summons in this set. They're creatures that can attack and block like any other, and then have a finisher/final chapter, after which they're sacrificed.
And you'll note something else really cool about this Shiva: There's flavor text on the card! Super cool to see on a complicated card type like this. It's also been confirmed that summons appear at all rarities, and the set will also have borderless sagas for the first time.
What Are Summons Will Be in the Set?

So far Shiva is the only summon that's been previewed, but there are some pretty easy ones to speculate on.
Bahamut is an iconic dragon that dates back to the very first Final Fantasy, when the โFinalโ in the series title was still relevant. Of course, Bahamut has made appearances across most mainline games, sometimes playing a greater role in the story, other times just being a super cool dragon to help you out in battle. There will 100% be some sort of Bahamut card in the set, if not multiples.
The fire demon Ifrit is a parallel to Shiva, and another shoe-in for the set. Odin's another iconic summon known for his one-shot kill abilities, and others like Titan, Ramuh, and Leviathan make appearances across multiple titles. Personal ask: a Carbuncle summon that gives your creatures hexproof counters. One time, Wizards, please.
