If you’re a Commander player who has been disappointed by the fact that the most recent set Reality Fracture only had a single accompanying precon, you can rest assured about next year, because Mark Rosewater just announced that every single set coming out in 2027 will have four Commander precon decks, a total of 24 for the year!

Precon Preconceptions

Of the six sets coming out next year, we only know what four of them will be. Nauctis: the Sunken Realm, Darkhold Destiny, Kamigawa: Titanbreach, and Zhalfir. There are two additional Universes Beyond sets that haven’t been announced yet. Among the four we do know, we only know what the Commander precons will be for the recently announced Darkhold Destiny.

These four decks–Lords of Hel, Midnight Sons, Gods of Asgard, and Strange Academy–are also available in collector’s edition printings. It’s unclear if the other unannounced precons for 2027 will also have these collector’s edition printings available, but I don’t imagine they wouldn’t.

As far as what we can expect for the unannounced precons, we can’t really say. Nauctis is an entirely new plane to us, so we don’t really know what it has to offer in terms of mechanics, and Zhalfir is in a similar boat even if it’s not entirely technically new. Kamigawa: Titanbreach is essentially two planes mashed together, but again we’re in the dark on mechanics, although it would be safe to assume there might be some kind of deck that represents the mechs, i.e. vehicles, and a deck that represents the monsters in some way. As for how they do that, no one can say yet.

New Expectations

Once Star Trek releases in November, the total number of Commander precons for 2026 will be 17. Two from Lorwyn Eclipsed, one from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, five from Secrets of Strixhaven, four from Marvel Super Heroes, none from The Hobbit, only one from Reality Fracture, and four from Star Trek.

This paints a picture of inconsistency, not that every single set demands four precons, especially small sets like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or The Hobbit, but it’s still strange how uneven these have been spread out. We had something similar in 2025, with only 13 total precons and uneven distribution of them across the sets. That’s what makes this announcement for 2027 all the more spectacular.

This will be by far the most Commander precons released in a calendar year with 24 total, and they will be evenly divided among the six sets. However, this may not all be as positive as it seems at first. Much like regular Magic sets causing product fatigue with their breakneck pace of releases, it begs the question: Is this too many Commander precons?

Is there demand for this many? And what can they be doing to be distinctive from each other? At a certain point, there is such a thing as too much, and although Commander has been quickly growing and is the largest section of the Magic player base, 24 commander decks is about equivalent to a new deck every two weeks. That’s a lot of Sol Rings.

Wrap Up

Assuming this goes well, most of these are hits, and there’s enough demand for all of these, then what’s next? I don’t doubt that if it’s successful that we would see this in 2028, although with how Magic release cycles work, they are likely already working on sets for 2028, including Commander products, which means they’re likely following the 2027 model of four decks per set, six sets per year, for a total of 24 precons.

If this is what we can expect going forward, at least for the next few years, what does this mean for the future of Commander? It certainly seems like a lot of product, but as long as there are people out there who have a demand for this kind of stuff, is there really such a thing as too much product? I suppose we’ll have to wait and see.
