Cloud's Limit Break โ art by Billy Christian
A lot of Final Fantasy characters care about weapons, with the franchise's most recognizable character always pictured wielding a huge sword. Fitting function to form, a lot of Magic cards in the upcoming Final Fantasy x MTG crossover are, or care about, equipment, which is the usual way in which Magic portrays weapons.
And, as you may guess from all the Final Fantasy-induced price spikes we've seen in the last few weeks, equipment cards are also seeing their prices rise.
In this case it's not all Cloud's fault, though. All three of Cloud's Magic versions โ Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER above all, but also Cloud, Midgar Mercenary and Cloud, Planet's Champion โ are indeed behind some of these spikes, but other MTG staples are also part of the equipment action.
Pip-Boy 3000: Fallout Meets Final Fantasy
Source: MTGStocks
Climbing non-stop since the full deck list from the Final Fantasy Commander precons were revealed two weeks ago, Falloutโs best boy more than doubled in price since then.
Pip-Boy 3000 is far from an unknown artifact: Known primarily for its chops under the banner of Fallout's other best boy, Dogmeat, Ever Loyal decks, the Pip-Boy 3000 has now also found a significant home in Final Fantasy-themed decks. Plenty of players are equipping the Pip-Boy with either Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER or Cloud, Midgar Mercenary in the Command Zone.
It probably helps that Pip-Boy 3000 looks like the sort of Universes Beyond card that's very unlikely to see a reprint: There's hardly a more Fallout-esque card than this one, and WotC has thus far been very reluctant about reprinting cards from IP they don't own.
Forge Anew: Quietly Gathering Steam
Forge Anew has gained nearly 50% since the FIC precons were revealed, from about $2 to around $3 today. And it's a card that has a tendency to spike quite high, as it has done three separate times since last July.

It has also seen the biggest demand in a year, with close to 200 copies sold the week of the EDH precon reveals.
Forge Anew appears in over half of all Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER and a whopping 80% of Cloud, Midgar Mercenary builds, according to EDHREC.
And, like Pip-Boy 3000, it's already a card that equipment commanders are very fond of: one of its previous spikes was related to Captain America, First Avenger, and is a regular feature in Nahiri, Forged in Fury decks.
Not to mention also quite good in Modern, as part of the Hammer Time archetype!
In short: Forge Anew is good in 60-card formats, very popular with existing Commanders, that works well with the upcoming Final Fantasy, and that has traded in record numbers recently. The price may not remain low for long!
Nahiri, Forged in Fury: A Boros Commander Favorite

What Nahiri, Forged in Fury lacks in cEDH proficiency, she more than makes up for by sheer popularity: Her widespread casual appeal has solidified her as a Top 200 commander overall, and as a Top 5 Boros commmander. And she's very fond of equipment!
In particular, Nahiri builds very often include Forge Anew, and her affinity for equipment extends to the new Final Fantasy toys: A quarter of her recent decks now pack a Samurai's Katana or a Dancer's Chakrams. And she's okay with following Cloud's lead: close to half of Cloud, Ex-Soldier decks, and same again for Cloud, Planet's Champion decks show Nahiri, Forged in Fury in the 99.
Brass Squire: A Cloudless Spike
Source: MTGStocks
Brass Squire breaks a bit from the pattern we've seen with the previous cards: This myr's recent price spike appears unrelated to Cloud or even Nahiri. What seems to be causing the surge is its proven effectiveness in decks helmed by Godo, Bandit Warlord, and its inclusion in early brews commanded by another Final Fantasy character: Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms.
Gilgamesh, Master-at-Arms builds also show interest in another staple of equipment decks: Blackblade Reforged, often seen in Nahiri decks and with cEDH potential alongside Kotis, the Fangkeeper.

Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER โ art by Justyna Dura
With our usual caveat that this is not investment advice (always do your own research, folks!), interest in equipment seems on the rise. Cards like Pip-Boy 3000 and Forge Anew were already solid, and now hundreds of new Cloud decks are popping up.
And it's not all Final Fantasy commanders: Staple equipment commanders like Nahiri are also getting traction.
