Itโ€™s been a week since Reality Fractureโ€˜s official release, and two trends are refusing to cool down: Planeswalker Season and Sphinx Season.

Superfriends staples are still going up as players build around Tam, the Possibility, Jace, Multiverse Architect, and several new planeswalker commanders. Meanwhile, The Ur-Sphinx keeps reminding us that if itโ€™s a sphinx, itโ€™s prolly about to spike.

Letโ€™s check the biggest movers!

Aminatou, the Fateshifter

Aminatou, the Fateshifter

Aminatou, the Fateshifter has gone bonkers this week, thanks to an upgrade to the Multiverse Reforged precon. As Eli reported earlier this week, the latest catalyst is a nasty new combo between Aminatou, Oath of Teferi (which went sky-high just last week!), and Spark Double.

Oath of Teferi lets every planeswalker you control activate loyalty abilities twice each turn. Spark Double can then enter as a nonlegendary copy of Aminatou. Because Oath of Teferi gives each Aminatou a second loyalty activation, you can use one โˆ’1 to flicker another permanent, then the second to reset the other Aminatou. And from there, your two Aminatous can flicker one another, to keep the combo going.

As a result, Aminatou, the Fateshifterโ€˜s price exploded from about $3-$4 last Friday, to well over $20 today. And at the time of writing near-mint on TCGPlayer are listed at around $28-$30.

As we reported last weekโ€ฆ it is still Sphinx Season.

And this Fridayโ€™s Spikinโ€™ Sphinx of the Week award goes toโ€ฆ Magister Sphinx!

The Double Masters 2022 printing was hovering around the $1-$2 range a week ago, and is currently trading at about $4.50, more than doubling since last week.

This is probably not news to you if youโ€™ve been following the Magic card market, but thereโ€™s one and only very clear suspect here: The Ur-Sphinx.

The Ur-Sphinx

This nine-mana 10/10 brings back eminence, reducing the cost of your other sphinx spells by while it sits either on the battlefield or safely in your command zone. Itโ€™s been spiking sphinxes left and right for weeks now; currently about three out of four Ur-Sphinx decks pack a Magister Sphinx copy, and prices have soared accordingly.

Jace, Arcane Strategist + Vronos, Masked Inquisitor

Jace, Arcane StrategistVronos, Masked Inquisitor

Thereโ€™s currently an intense tug-of-war between sphinxes and planeswalkers about who can spike more cards; Jace, Arcane Strategist and Vronos, Masked Inquisitor showed up this week to pull for the Walker side.

The picture here is a bit messier, though. These two planeswalkers have seen very real surges in demand, and both benefit from Reality Fracture making Superfriends fashionable again. But neither seem to have (thus far at least) slam-dunk usage numbers weโ€™ve seen with cards like Oath of Teferi last week, or weโ€™ll see in a bit with The Chain Veil.

Letโ€™s start with Jace, Arcane Strategist. Demand has definitely spiked since a month ago, and has remained high; the price has shot up accordingly, above all during last weekโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ but that demand has thus far not shown up in inclusion rate with new commanders. For example, only about 8% of current Jace, Multiverse Architect decks include Jace, Arcane Strategist, and less than 2% of Tam, the Possibility do so, according to EDHREC.

In particular, the new empower Jace cannot put loyalty counters on a normal, nontoken Jace, Arcane Strategist. The mechanic specifically works with Jace tokens. My guess is the demand comes from cards like Jace's Machinations (who care about Jace planeswalkers in general), while Jace, Multiverse Architect gives old Jaces a home.

But, thus far, this seems a bit more speculative than other cards weโ€™ve seen, that have very clear commanders that players are playing them with.

Vronos, Masked Inquisitor, which has gone through the roof this week, has a bit of a stronger case.

About 20% of Tam, the Possibility decks currently include Vronos, along with similar numbers for Feroz, Ulgrotha's Warden from Mystery Booster Commander Edition. And it already is an auto-include with Commodore Guff, appearing in nearly 80% of those decks. Vronos also has one printing, from Commander Masters, so scarce supply may be part of the reason why Vronos, Masked Inquisitor has spiked so hard.

Tivit, Seller of Secrets

Tivit, Seller of Secrets

Tivit, Seller of Secrets is this weekโ€™s runner up for the Spikinโ€™ Sphinx title. He has been flip-flopping a bit in the last couple of weeks, but itโ€™s going up in the last few days, and has more than doubled since Sphinx Season started: Regular copies that were roughly at $4 before Sphinx Season are now around $8-$9, while premium versions have climbed even higher.

Unlike some of the forgotten sphinxes getting dragged upward by a new commander, though, Tivit, Seller of Secrets is very serious Magic card. It currently sits around #172 among the most popular commanders in all of MTG, itโ€™s quite capable in cEDH, and is in fairly short supply: Tivit originally appeared only in Commander: Streets of New Capenna and has never been reprinted (although it does have an announced paper reprint, a The List version in the upcoming Mystery Booster Commander Edition).

And now has found another job withโ€ฆ yeah, you guessed, The Ur-Sphinx.

The Chain Veil

The Chain Veil

Scoring for Team Walkers, we have an artifact: The Chain Veil has jumped from around $6 to well into the $15 range. Even cheaper versions of the card are now around $9.

For and tapping, The Chain Veil lets each planeswalker you control use one additional loyalty ability that turn. Which, in the current market, is kind of a lot!

The Chain Veil is getting quite a lot of demand from Tam, the Possibility decks, plus some from Jace, Multiverse Architect decksโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ but, as in previous weeks, thereโ€™s quite a bit of interest from Mystery Booster Commander Edition cards: there are no less than three planeswalkers which you can put in the command zone and seem very interested in the veil: Arzakon, Worzel, the Protector, and Feroz, Ulgrotha's Warden.

Team Walkers beats Team Sphinx this weekโ€ฆ but weโ€™ll see what happens the next!
