The Warhammer 40K Commander decks that Wizards of the Coast released back in 2022 were some of the most popular products theyโ€™ve ever sold. A lot of people wanted to get their hands on them, but thanks to limited supply, resale prices have been relatively high for anyone still trying to get one. However, this might be changing, as Wizards of the Coast announced that they would be reprinting these decks, the first time theyโ€™ve ever reprinted a Universes Beyond product like this.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Warhammer 40K Commander precons are a set of four ready-to-play decks, each headed by a popular faction in the game.

Necron Dynasties

โ€œGrind your opponents into dust! Build your army of mindless androids alongside commanders Szarekh, The Silent King and Imotekh, The Stormlord.โ€

Forces of Imperium

โ€œYour army brings glory amid endless battles in the far future. The war may be the same, but the battlefield is always new with Commanders Inquisitor Greyfax and Marneus Calgar.โ€

Tyranid Swarm

โ€œDefeat and devour your enemies with gigantic creatures and commanders The Swarmlord and Magus Lucea Kane.โ€

The Ruinous Powers

โ€œSow discord and destruction for the glory of Chaos with commanders Abaddon the Despoiler and Beโ€™lakor, the Dark Master.โ€

Setting a Precedent For Reprints

Bone Sabres | Illustration by David Auden Nash

Universes Beyond products such as Warhammer 40k are difficult to reprint naturally. Most cards can be reprinted in most sets. For the ones that canโ€™t they often find their ways into Secret Lairs or Commander pre cons. But with Universes Beyond, this isnโ€™t really an option. The cards are too specific to the setting to print elsewhere, and this has led many to assume that products like Warhammer 40k would simply go without reprints unless they were to have a return to the set.

However, despite these products being printed four years ago, Wizards of the Coast has simply decided to reprint them as is, which seems like a simple solution to meet the demand that exists. Going forward, we may therefore see more of this style of reprinting for Universes Beyond products that canโ€™t be easily reprinted elsewhere. The most obvious that comes to mind would be the Fallout Commander precons, as they were fairly popular and Iโ€™m sure another limited print run would sell out quickly.

As for normal sets, Iโ€™m not sure if they will have the same attitude. Commander precons will sell no matter what, but for draftable full sets, the same demand may not be there, at least for the baseline products like play booster boxes. However, for Collector Booster boxes, Iโ€™m sure additional print runs would be popular for Universes Beyond products such as the original Lord of the Rings set

Now, will they actually do something like this? I canโ€™t really say, this is all speculative, but if they were to do it, it would certainly have a big impact on the secondary market, as much of the value of these cards is tied up in the fact that theyโ€™re not thought to be getting reprints. Given that resellers like it when the value of their product stays high, perhaps there will be some controversy from the reprinting of Warhammer 40k commander pre cons from the secondary market, but I canโ€™t imagine that Wizards of the Coast is too concerned with this.

Wrap Up

These reprints are a welcome sight to see. The game has grown a lot since these decks were last available, and Iโ€™m sure a lot of new players would love to be able to get their hands on them, and now theyโ€™ll be able to do so. Hopefully, reprints like this become a habit for Wizards of the Coast, as itโ€™s good for the players to have easy access to these products and there really isnโ€™t an easy way to reprint these cards otherwise. Do you think this is a good change? Will you be buying one of these decks?
