New Masters of the Universe Secret Lair Superdrop Embraces Classic Cartoon

Yesterday, Wizards announced the next big Secret Lair drop (and crossover): The Most Powerful Superdrop in the Universe! This He-Man crossover goes live on September 14 at 9:00am PT (pre-queue opens at 8:00am), with five different Secret Lairs on tap, as well as bundles to purchase all of them. All five drops contain reskins or reprints. There’s also an exclusive promo Swan Song you can get for every $149 spent:

Secret Lair x Masters of the Universe: By the Power of Grayskull!

By the Power of Grayskull! takes an aggressive route, stylizing He-Man as Winota, Joiner of Forces—quite fitting considering how powerful Winota is as a Boros () commander. All the cards fall under the Boros color identity, with Crackle with Power receiving a very welcome reprint.

Secret Lair x Masters of the Universe: Nyah-ha-ha!

Skeletor takes center stage in this Secret Lair, which focuses on black cards, with the outlier reskin of Tasha's Hideous Laughter. When I evaluate Secret Lairs, I’m always on the lookout for a harmonious Lair with cards that ideally work well together or are at least playable, which this does decently. Laughter is an outlier, but the other cards mesh well. I can see the Tinybones—excuse me, Skeletor—deck running the other black cards. And at least Tasha's is a great mill card, so it still sees play.

Secret Lair x Masters of the Universe: She-Ra, Princess of Power

The She-Ra Secret Lair appeals to me because of that harmony I mentioned; these are all extremely playable in a Sisay, Weatherlight Captain deck, though Emiel the Blessed and Silence are more likely to see play in cEDH Sisay. It also has a lovely, textless Sol Ring, which has a decent chance of being the most valuable card from the entire Superdrop given the high demand for pretty Sol Rings in Commander.

Secret Lair x Masters of the Universe: Allies and Enemies of Eternia

Allies and Enemies is less impressive than the other drops. Sakashima the Impostor is a major reprint and Derevi, Empyrial Tactician is a solid Commander card, but they’re buddied up with disappointing bulk rares like Samut, Voice of Dissent and Tetsuo, Imperial Champion.

Secret Lair x Masters of the Universe: Sold Separately

The card quality rebounds in Sold Seperately. Okay, Fortune, Loyal Steed’s a bust, but the other cards are at least cool, and in the case of Sword of War and Peace and Throne of the God-Pharaoh, extremely appealing to Commander players. It would have been cool if this was all artifacts as accessories, but what can you do?

Which Masters of the Universe Cards Are Best In Commander?

If you want to pick up a single Secret Lair to get the most for your Commander collection, I’d be eyeing the She-Ra drop. Even if you don’t want to build around Sisay, Weatherlight Captain, the other cards are fantastic. Hajar gets better with every set, Emiel is a perfect combo card, and what deck doesn’t play a gorgeous Sol Ring?

I also like Nyah-Ha-Ha! for its discard focus. If you want to make your opponents discard cards, Bottomless Pit and Necrogen Mists are excellent enablers, and Tinybones and Breach work as sideways payoffs.

Beyond those Secret Lairs, I’d look for singles as the other drops contain good cards but they might not bolster your collection the same way, unless you happen to be building multiple decks at once.
