Three years ago, Tales of Middle-earth took Magic by storm, introducing busted cards like The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters, incredible role-players like Mithril Coat and Raise the Palisade… oh, and a bunch of legendary creatures to represent our friends and foes from Middle-earth.

This summer brings us The Hobbit, which already boasts Smaug the Magnificent, and this time around, the set is going through Standard. That’s why today, I’ve got your roadmap on the path to Prerelease!

Queue up some Howard Shore soundtracks, because we’re going on an adventure!

What Is the Hobbit Prerelease?

The Hobbit Prerelease is a series of events that will be held during the week leading into the official release date of the Hobbit Magic: The Gathering set on August 14. It’s our first chance to open and play with cards from the new set before they’re officially legal in Standard and other formats.

What Format Is Prerelease?

Prerelease events are generally Sealed, a Limited format in which players open Prerelease Kits that contain 6 Play Boosters and build 40-card decks from the contents, with support from basic lands supplied by the event holder (don’t forget to return them!).

Attendees then battle it out, usually in three rounds of 1v1, best-of-three matches.

There can be some variation. For example, some locations hold Two-Headed Giant events, where players compete in teams of two. My LGS’s first event is always a quick two-round event that guarantees every player gets a Play Booster as a prize, with an additional booster for each match won.

What Comes in a Hobbit Prerelease Kit?

The Hobbit Prerelease kit

A Hobbit Prerelease Kit comes with:

  • 6 The Hobbit Play Boosters
  • 1 foil rare or mythic card
  • 1 spindown die

Your Prerelease Kit’s packaging functions as a deck box and should including relevant punch-out counters and markers.

Note that the foil promotional card is no longer date-stamped.

When Is the Hobbit Prerelease Weekend?

The Hobbit Prerelease weekend is Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, 2026.

Where Can You Attend the Prerelease?

You can attend the Hobbit Prerelease at game stores affiliated with the Wizards Play Network (WPN). To find an event near you, visit the Wizards store locator and input your address or ZIP code. The map defaults to all stores and events near you, but you can filter specifically for Prerelease events.

I recommend that you download the MTG Companion App ahead of Prerelease for easier sign-in.

Who Goes to Prereleases?

Magic Prerelease events attract Magic fans in general as well as fans of Limited and Sealed play. Universes Beyond sets, like The Hobbit, tend to attract fans of the intellectual property that’s been adapted, so expect some new-to-Magic Tolkien-heads.

Prereleases are good events for newer or returning players, since there’s a more level playing field. The cards are new to everyone, and all brewers are working from the same card pool and the same random distribution.

Is Going to Prerelease Worth It?

If you enjoy playing Magic and hanging out with other Magic players, Prerelease is absolutely worthwhile. It’s the first chance to play with the cards from The Hobbit, and you get to do so in a rather low-stakes environment. But to get good value, check the price at different game stores before you commit to an event.

One caveat is that as a Universes Beyond set, the price to attend is usually higher than your typical Magic release. The price of individual boosters is usually higher too, and the price of the event is usually about as much as the individual boosters, if not a little more. The promotional foil card is also no longer date-stamped, which has an impact on that card’s collectability and value over time.

HOB Sealed Simulator

Once the full Hobbit set is previewed, we’ll have the full card list available in our Sealed Simulator. By generating simulated pools of cards similar to the ones you’ll pull at the Prerelease, you can get a head start on your journey and develop strategies for the types of decks you’ll build.

The Hobbit is refreshing among Universes Beyond sets because it’s an actual fantasy setting rather than something like the streets of New York City. I expect this set’s Prerelease to be more popular than Marvel Super Heroes, but only time will tell.
