Secret Lair Chaos Vault continues to introduce oddities, and this latest Food Secret Lair is no exception. โ€œOishiii! Tokensโ€ marks the first Secret Lair to come with no actual Magic cards; when you order Oishii! Tokens, you are skipping dinner for desert! To compensate for this, the price point for this one has been reduced to $14.99 for four non-foils, and $19.99 for four foils.

What is Oishii! Anyways?

โ€œOishiiโ€ just means โ€˜delicious' in Japanese, and may be exclaimed after the first bite of something, well, delicious. That makes Oishii! an apt name for a set of custom Food tokens. You can also clearly see the Japanese influence all over the art for these food tokens, both stylistically and by what is being portrayed. There's also a reference to Secret Lair 30 on Token 2010, as the onigiri looks just like Lil'Giri!

Who is the Artist Behind These Tokens?

ใ‚‚ใฟใ˜็œŸ้ญš/MAOMOMIJI is the artist for these, and has lots of other great art on their Instagram! Their style is very cute, with lots of friendly animals and plenty of food.

How Has the Reaction to the Drop Been?

Thus far, the community seems largely negative, though none of the ire is directed at the art itself (which frankly is just great). Here's a sample of complaints from the reddit thread previewing it:

  • โ€œThis is the kind of thing I would add to my cart to get it over shipping and handling restrictions, or get my cart high enough for the free card.โ€ (KingOfRedLions)
  • โ€œDick move to put this as a separate drop from the Vacation superdrop, WotC. Shame on yaโ€™ll.โ€ (sco0terkid)
  • โ€œBeautiful but yโ€™all canโ€™t be seriously be selling food tokens for $15โ€ (RamenPack1)
  • โ€œMaybe MAYBE if it's not one of each. A fat stack of them could justify the priceโ€ (Frank_the_Mighty)

As you can see, the negative gut reactions are all about people not wanting to pay $15 for Food tokens. You could even contend that Food tokens are among the worst kinds of tokens to pay $15 for, as they tend to get, well, eaten!

Token Troubles

One reason for the price sensitivity here is that proxies are legal for tokens at all levels of play! Unless you are playing a Feature Match on camera, you are entirely welcome to just write โ€œFoodโ€ on a piece of paper and use that for $0. This also creates a window for artists to sell custom tokens online, and usually at a far better price point than $15 for four tokens.

Regardless, if Oishii! Tokens looks too delicious to resist, you can order it for yourself before it goes bad!
