In case you haven't noticed, it feels like MTG is getting pricier and pricier with each passing day, unless we're talking about Spider-Man collector products. Several new bits of info have dropped in the past few weeks that have players concerned.

General Price Increases

In the wake of the general collector craze, MSRP on Collector Boosters is now $26.99 instead of $24.99. Commander precons will be at $49.99 instead of $44.99. In their Collecting Lorwyn Eclipsed article, WotC clearly stated that these prices would be standard moving forward. Who knows what will happen with Universes Beyond product, which already fetches universally higher prices. Seems like Standard may have a permanently higher gate to entry now that UB is permanently Standard-legal. Same for Limited.

Seems like a small scale shift, but it seems likely that the outcome on the secondary market will be exponential.

Removing Art Cards

This is a contentious issue among players. On one hand, removing art cards from Play Boosters appears to be an innocuous change. Including more playable tokens or rules booklets does seem like the kind of thing that would help bolster play.

Art cards will now be findable only in Collector Boosters. Which perhaps makes sense given their newfound value.

I won't lie, I usually just toss my art cards in the trash. However, Final Fantasy has ushered in a new era: A gold stamped Tifa Lockhart art card is currently worth $10 on TCGplayer. An additional $10 of value is nothing to scoff at. This makes it extra unfortunate that you can no longer find them in Play Boosters. Getting $10 back on a Draft seems like a solid bonus to me.

Final Fantasy Collector Boosters usually go for around $100 a pack…which makes the bonus feel a little less significant.

Removing Collector Sample Pack

This is a huge bummer. For the added price of $5, each Lorwyn precon will no longer include a Collector Sample Pack. Awesome!

Each Collector Sample pack included two cards: One foil common or uncommon, and a guaranteed foil rare or mythic. In Final Fantasy, this meant you had chance at pulling some insane extra value.

One redditor opened a Kozilek, The Broken Reality with their MH3 precon. Even if the cards found in these packs didn't work in their respective precons, they provided players with prime trade material, or even the option to start building another new deck.

Wrap Up

While it is cool that we'll be getting more tokens in Play Boosters, losing out on value is uncool. Collector sample packs provided a fun way to further expand your collection, and it seems we won't be getting those anymore. Magic is getting more expensive across the board, and it seems like that trend won't be stopping anytime soon.
