Looks like momentum rules the Magic card market right now: two of the biggest spike this week are from cards that were already going strong in our previous financial reports.

Let's check what's still running hot, and which cards have seen sudden spikes!

Sonic Screwdriver

Sonic Screwdriver

Sonic Screwdriver is not screwing around! As we reported earlier this week, this mana rock from Doctor Who was going upโ€ฆ and it has kept going, and going, and going: depending on the version, you're looking at anything from a 250% to a 520% spike. The version Illustrated by Pauline Voss, for example, has gone from less than $1 to nearly $5 since last Friday:

Sonic Screwdriverโ€˜s price spike looks connected to growing cEDH interest: It has seen some competitive success in Heliod, the Radiant Dawn in the last few months, and more recently with Esika, God of the Tree in the command zone.

Plaguebearer

Plaguebearer

Speaking of MTG cards that haven't lost momentum, Plaguebearer is another card that keeps going up. Last week we saw this black zombie doubling in price from $2.50 to over $5โ€ฆ and this week it performed even better than that, punching up by another 150% and hitting above $12.50:Source: MTGStocks

The reason keeps being the same: Premodern has become one of the major factors in the MTG card market, and Plaguebearer is a key sideboard tech in Recur โ€“ Survival decks in that format.

Premodern's price effect is usually seen in the original printings, but in this case the Exodus version is the only Plaguebearer ever printed.

Wall of Blossoms (Stronghold printing)

Wall of Blossoms

Wall of Blossoms is a great example of Premodern's effect on current card prices, and how it affects different printings.

This green wall is pretty popular in casual Commander: it's an auto-include in Arcades, the Strategist decks, it has become very popular with Felothar the Steadfast from Tarkir: Dragonstorm, and recently it has seen play with a new Commander from Lorwyn Eclipsed, Doran, Besieged by Time decks. But since it has been reprinted a lot of times (and as recently as Tarkir: Dragonstorm), most copies are worth just a few cents.

Yet if you check the Stronghold original printingโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ the story is completely different: a 140% increase in the last week, going from about $2.50 to over $6, thanks to competitive play like Angry Elves decks in Premodern.

Grave Pact (Stronghold printing)

Grave Pact

Here's another Stronghold card, which in this case needs little introduction: Grave Pact is one of the best edict effects in Magic, it's straight up one of the best black enchantments in the game. It's so good that the cheapest reprint you can find costs at least $20 for near-mint copies.

But look at what's going on with the Stronghold original:

Since last Friday, original printings have doubled in price, from about $25 to almost $50, and they are the only printings showing such spike.

Other Premodern Staples Going Up

Chill

Chill (a great name for a card that hates red!) is pretty hot right now, seeing lots of play in Premodern Stasis decks:

And, perhaps to show that red is no slouchโ€ฆ

Veteran Brawlers

โ€ฆVeteran Brawlers is pulling a similar trick, although in this case there's no discrepancy between versions: the Prophecy original has never been reprinted.

The bottom line seems clearer and clearer with each passing week: Premodern may end up being this year's biggest story as far as MTG finance is concerned!
