Magic's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover releases todayโฆ but the most consistent factor behind the biggest spikes in the MTG card market is, once again, Premodern. Old is the new new, I guess!
And this week there's also a spike that comes directly from cEDH, and for one of the most popular Commanders in the game, but that casual players have not yet found out about.
Let's check what's up this week!
Flash Photography
Final Fantasyโs Flash Photography is a very niche card in casual Commander decks: a pretty low play rate, and the commander that includes it most often is Noctis, Heir Apparent.
But in the competitive cEDH scene the story is very different, which seems to explain why this niche blue sorcery doubled in price since last week (from about $15 by the end of February to about $30 now), and with near-mint copies currently listed at $40-45 in the US card market:

In late January, Daniel Moss ended #2 in the Breach The Bay tournament against a field of 188 players, playing a Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy deck with Flash Photography in the 99. And in early Feburary, Evan Pierce piloted a Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy deck to the first spot of the Dallas $10k cEDH tournament, while Max D. Pfeferman came in second with a Thrasios + Tymna deck. Both of them also played Flash Photography.
Looks like a staple in the making!
Living Wish
Living Wish is another sorcery that more than doubled in price this week, from about $7 last Friday to well over $15 today:

By now it's abundantly clear that Premodern is one of the most important factors we've seen in the MTG card market in the last several months: competitive Premodern cards just keep going up.
The caveat here is that Premodern players overwhelmingly go for the original printings (even though the format does allow you to use reprints), and Living Wishโs spike has thus far only affected the Judgement original, and not the Masters 25 reprint.ย
Plaguebearer
Exact same dynamic as Living Wish here: This black zombie that most Commander players don't even know that it's an actual card (even though said players do love zombie decks!) also doubled in price in the last seven days, going from about $2.50 to over $5โฆ

โฆ and all thanks to Premodern, and in particular Recur โ Survival decks where Plaguebearer is a key sideboard tech. No discrepancies between different printings here, on grounds that the Exodus original is the only version available!
The Ooze + Irma, Part-Time Mutant + Cool but Rude
Not everything in the Magic card market is about Premodern, though.
There's also pizza, with Mutant Ninja Turtles on top!
Huge caveat here: TMT releases today, so we're still dealing with pre-release prices, which tend to drop a ton as soon as players start pack-cracking.
Still, it's not usual for cards to have a spike just a few days before release, but that's what The Ooze, Irma, Part-Time Mutant and Cool but Rude have done, going up by around 200โ250% by the middle of the week. I'll avoid pasting price graphs in this case since, as noted, they may look very outdated in just a few hours, but if you're opening TMT boosters or drafting the set this weekend, keep these three in mind:
The Ooze, from the TMT main set, is getting included in a lot of theorycrafted brews with the new kids in town as commanders; mainly with Leonardo, the Balance and Michelangelo, the Heart as partners, but also with the Donatello, the Brains & Michelangelo, the Heart pair.
The same is happening with Irma, Part-Time Mutant, although in this case it's not too surprising since Irma is also part of the TMT Commander precon.
Haunting Echoes
Then againโฆ
โฆ yeah, Premodern has the newest Universes Beyond MTG set beat when it comes to impacting the MTG card market. Haunting Echoes is yet another oldie sorcery that more than doubled in price (in this case jumping from a little below $8 to well over $17 in the span of seven days), and in this case continued the rally we saw last weekโฆ

โฆ all thanks to Premodern, and the spike as usual restricted to the original Odyssey printing.
