Magic: The Gathering Star Trek Prereleases kick off today, with the newest Magic set hitting tabletops next Friday.
So far, though, the Magic card market hasn’t exactly kicked into warp speed. Unlike The Hobbit or Reality Fracture, Star Trek doesn’t seem to have had too much impact.
That makes this a relatively quiet week for price spikes. We’ve still got a reprint of an old zombie lord catching up to its pricier printings, an Assassin’s Creed commander getting a batch of shiny new toys, and a forgotten planeswalker that got moving.
Undead Warchief – Foundations Commander version
Undead Warchief is a bit of an odd case. Zombie players have known this thing is good for more than 20 years, and it sees a ton of play with zombie commanders Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver, Varina, Lich Queen, and The Scarab God among its most common commanders.
And, given that until now all its previous printings are fairly old, prices were relatively high: near-mint versions of the Scourge and Time Spiral printings are in the $14-$18 range.
But it looks like new players, and in particular those buying Foundations Commander (where this old zombie just got reprinted), may have not been aware of how good, and expensive, this card is: The Foundations Commander version was priced at about $1 when it started trading back in September.
Fast forward to today, and is trading around $5 this week, and after jumping from $3.5 last Friday.

Whether Undead Warchief eventually gets anywhere near those older versions is another question. But, thus far, it has been climbing steadily.
Leonardo da Vinci
Leonardo da Vinci has more than doubled this week: The regular Assassin’s Creed printing was only around $1.20 last Friday. It’s now roughly $3, a gain of more than 100% in seven days.

Leonardo is a mono-blue artifact commander with an unusual trick: by discarding an artifact, you can exile it from your graveyard and make a token copy — except that copy is also a 0/2 Thopter artifact creature with flying. In other words, Leonardo is perfectly happy to turn absurdly expensive artifacts into tiny flying versions of themselves while keeping all their interesting text.
And Reality Fracture has given Leonardo some cool new toys, like Memnarch, the Warden (nearly 60% of Leonardo decks are now packing a copy), and Darksteel Angel, which while under your control makes sure that you can’t lose the game and your opponents can’t win.
I also have a hunch that Leonardo spike may have some connection to the upcoming Star Trek: TRK has tons of artifacts, and a lot of cards that care about artifact creatures.
Jace, the Living Guildpact
Oh look. Another Jace!
Jace, the Living Guildpact has jumped from about $2-$3 last week to over $5 today.
The obvious suspect here, as with all things Jace, is Jace, Multiverse Architect: it has reached roughly 15,000 decks on EDHREC, and is fast approaching the Top 100 despite having existed for barely a month.

This spike looks a bit speculative, though. Jace, the Living Guildpact isn’t anywhere close to an auto-include, and you find it in just about 8% of the new Jace decks. Still, that’s roughly 1,200 copies of a pretty old planeswalker, with no reprints, that are suddenly finding a new home.
Enough to send a forgotten card higher!
