Surtr, Fiery Jötun | Illustration by Evan Shipard
Assassin's Creed was one of the least impactful Magic sets of 2024. It did so poorly that Beyond Boosters, the new kind of MTG packs that debuted with this set, were considered a failure by Wizards of the Coast and never used again.
The set does have one very good commander, card]Ezio Auditore da Firenze[/card], but by and large Assassin's Creed had a very minor impact. Its most popular cards, like Brotherhood Regalia and Excalibur, Sword of Eden, see relatively little play.
Although that may be about to change for one ACR card: Surtr, Fiery Jötun, which is spiking hard in price thanks to Magic's newest god warrior.

Like the huge majority of Assassin's Creed‘s cards, Surtr, Fiery Jötun has been a bulk bin card costing well below $1. Things started changing in early October, though, with Surtr, Fiery Jötun steadily rising from around $0.80 to about $2.85 three days ago… and from them it spiked another 88% to reach $5.36 at the time of writing: A massive 670% increase in the last 30 days.

As noted, this Giant God Warrior has never been too impactful a card: It's not a good mono-red commander, has seen very little play in the 99 thus far, and has no competitive pedigree to speak of…
… but there's a new Warrior God in town, and he's building a team.
Why Is Surtr, Fiery Jötun Price Spiking?
In three words: PlayStation Secret Lair
More precisely, one partner commander from the Secret Lair x God of War: Norse: Kratos, Stoic Father (who partners with Atreus, Impulsive Son)

For starters, Kratos, Stoic Father wants you to attack with gods (and is not too unhappy if they happen to die in the process). And since Gods are also legendary (which count as the historic spells that Surtr cares about), with Surtr, Fiery Jötun in play you get extra mileage from every deity you play.
The synergy is strong enough that, while Surtr, Fiery Jötun is right now one of the least played gods in the Jeskai color identity, it has one of the highest inclusion rates when Kratos and Atreus are in the command zone. Nearly three out of four Kratos-Atreus decks include a copy of Surtr, way over other mono-red staples like Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might or Purphoros, Bronze-Blooded.

Kratos and Atreus are building a team, and not all teammates are gods.
Otharri, Suns' Glory is no deity, and has no direct synergy with gods or legendaries, but it produces experience counters on attack. And both father and son very much welcome that XP boost.
Otharri, Suns' Glory‘s inclusion rate in Kratos-Atreus decks is even higher than Surtr, Fiery Jötun‘s, and it's in fact their second most-played card.

As a result, this red phoenix's price has seen a sharp uptick in the last week – yet it still hasn't reached its $2.88 peak from last April, so it may still have room to fly higher.
