Magic: The Gathering will be entering the celebrity signature game with the release of their crossover Star Trek set this November, and to commemorate this further step into the world of collectibility, Magic will have a limited print run of cards depicting characters from the Star Trek universe, signed by the actors who played those characters.
Sir Patrick Stewart is confirmed to be one of the seven signitaries, and we got a sneak peek of what his exclusive Captain Jean-Luc Picard Magic card will look like. And, uh, there might be a small problem with his.
Crossing IPs
As you can see, everyone's favorite knighted actor made a bit of a mistake with his signature, scrawling “Professor X” on nearly half of the almost 500 signed cards that players might find in upcoming Star Trek Collector Boosters.
Unfortunately, it seems a WotC intern had incorrectly informed Stewart that he'd be signing Marvel Super Hero cards. The same mistake happened when Sir Ian McKellen signed his Lord of the Rings Gandalf cards as “Magneto” three years ago, though the signed cards from that set were never released, instead boiled down into a substance that was then reformed and used for the cardboard that became the 1:1 The One Ring.
To make matters worse, it was reported that the Red Roof Inn in which Sir Patrick Stewart was invited to sign the cards contained no pens of any nature, and the hotel staff could only find a blue crayon left behind by a family of seven that had checked out earlier that day, hence the radical red color with which Stewart wrote the incorrect signature.
An on-sight WotC employee who witnessed the signing but asked to remain anonymous informed us that the “X-Men” mistake was not the only incorrect signature he saw. According to Paul our source, the famous actor was about half-way through the pile of cards before a WotC representative stopped him. Unfortunately, that rep incorrectly informed Stewart of an upcoming Moby Dick Secret Lair, after which Stewart continued signing the rest of the cards as “Captain Ahab”.
“Did you know he was in a Moby Dick adaptation?” asked our anonymous source. “I sure didn't.”
After just a couple Captain Ahab signatures, the ship was corrected once more and Stewart began using his intended name to sign the rest of the cards, though this means only roughly half as many “Sir Patrick Stewart” signatures exist on these ultra-rare Captain Pickard cards. MTG finance experts predict the remaining Professor X prints might go on to become some of the most expensive collectibles in all of Magic.
Shaky Start for Star Trek
Star Trek might be going boldly down the drain with so many mishaps ahead of the scheduled release. Sir Patrick Stewart is actually the second actor to flub these exclusive signed cards so hard, with the first being William Shatner, who inadvertantly signed all 500 of his cards as “Priceline Negotiator”.
Between the signature debocle, backlash from Benedict Cumberbatch for using his likeness on Sheoldred, the Apocalypse without permission, and the fact that most copies of the U.S.S. Enterprise were erroneously printed as “The Millenium Falcon”, Star Trek is off to a really tough start, which isn't a great look for a set aimed at Magic: The Gathering's geriatric demographic.
