All that is gold does not glitter. Not all those who wander are lost.

J.R.R. Tolkien

I think there are many of us who joined the hype for The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. It's about time to look at some iconic figures from the LotR lore.

That’s right, the Nazgûl have come to Magic! These servants of the Dark Lord were once men and now live between realms only to serve. In MTG, they may serve you well as a growing army of wraiths. These wraiths are like army-trained witches and have some tricks up their sleeves that you’ll want to get to know!

Gallery and List of Nazgûl Cards

How Many Nazgûl Cards Are There?

There are nine cards with the identical name “Nazgûl.” They all have different art, but the same mana value, abilities, and stats.

There are also two different depictions and cards for the Witch-king: Witch-king, Bringer of Ruin and Witch-king of Angmar.

What Packs of Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth Are Nazgûl Found in?

LotR: Tales of Middle-earth collector booster box

The Nazgûl appear in set, draft, and collector booster packs. The Nazgûl aren’t found in the Commander precons, but The Hosts of Mordor contains the legendary Lord of the Nazgûl.

How Many Nazgûl Are You Allowed to Have in Your Deck?

The rule for non-singleton decks is you can have a maximum of four copies of a single nonbasic land card name, unless the card explicitly says you may have more copies. Nazgûl states that you may have up to nine copies of it in your deck, and it even applies to singleton formats. This means that you can have up to nine Nazgûl cards in your deck, even in a Commander deck.

Can You Have Nine Copies of Each Art?

No, you can’t have nine copies of each art in your deck. The different artworks aren’t different cards, they’re all under the same name of Nazgûl. You can only have up to nine Nazgûl cards of any artwork combination in your deck.

What Is the Ring Tempts You?

The Ring tempts you is a new keyword action introduced in this set. It’s made to show the power and influence of The One Ring. This is a command zone effect similar to venture into the dungeon with an emblem to keep track of the abilities that The Ring has. Whenever the Ring tempts you is triggered, two things happen.

First, you choose a creature to become your Ring-bearer. Only one of your creatures may be a Ring-bearer at any given time, and they receive all the abilities that come from The Ring emblem. Second, The Ring emblem gains its next ability in the command zone. Starting with the first ability at the top, each Ring tempts you trigger gains the new ability below it. The abilities aren’t lost once they’ve been activated, so the abilities compound until all four abilities show the true power of The Ring.

Is Nazgûl Good?

I think a lot of players have differing opinions on Nazgûl being viable in competitive play. I personally believe that it isn’t going to be able to keep up with other strategies.

I don’t see a growing army of creatures that cost three mana competing in Standard at the moment. It may be difficult to get enough Nazgûl to slow down mono-red aggro with cards like Mechanized Warfare and Monastery Swiftspear. On the other side of the spectrum, I can see your Nazgûl army easily being controlled by cards like Sunfall or Depopulate.

The Nazgûl may have some more value in Commander. The fact that you can have lots of them gives you a probability advantage over other rule-restricted decks. They may fit well into a wraith deck surrounded by removal spells. I’m thinking of Felisa, Fang of Silverquill as a commander, or maybe even Witch-king of Angmar to keep the LotR theme going.

I think Nazgûl is worth toying around with, but it probably won’t make a splash in cEDH.

Is Nazgûl Good in Draft?

Nazgûl may be good in Drafts with a bit of luck. This seems like the kind of card that everyone will pass on. If you don’t pass on it yourself, you may have an ever-growing army. The lower amount of removal in Drafts mixed with the extra abilities from The Ring may make this a formidable strategy.

This is all predicated on drafting many Nazgûl cards. It may be hard unless you get passed a lot of them since the card has an uncommon rarity. My suggestion is to maybe take one in the first round for its deathtouch and see what gets passed to you.

What Is the Rarity/Frequency of Nazgûl?

Nazgûl is an uncommon card. In regular booster packs the card appears at the same frequency as other uncommons in boosters. Each of the nine artworks of Nazgûl also appear an equal amount of times throughout boosters. For collector boosters, Nazgûl shows up in about 9% of the packs.

Can You Play 10 or More Nazgûl in Draft?

No, in Limited formats (Sealed and Draft) you can only play up to nine copies of Nazgûl. This is thanks to that pesky rules text, “a deck can have up to nine cards name Nazgûl.”

All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring (Gandalf)

These words ring true in many aspects of life, and the game of Magic. I’ll stop quoting LotR when it stops being so fun. I hope you’ve learned about the upcoming Nazgûl cards and how they might fit into your dominating plans.

In MTG Arena, I can’t find any nazguls. I do a search in the deck builder and nothing shows up. Do you have to get the first one randomly in a pack before you can wildcard the rest of them?

Hey Geo, a couple of possible reasons.
      1) Make sure you’ve selected the LotR set in the search filters.
      2) Make sure you’re not selecting either “collected” or “not colected” in the filters

Do either of those things help?
