While some cards from Marvel Super Heroes have already been making a huge impact across formats, there's plenty that are so bad they might as well not exist. This is nothing new, not all cards are for all formats, and there's lots of cards that are just for draft that don't matter in a format like Commander. This is especially true when talking about the commanders themselves, as you can only have legendary creatures as your commander, and most creatures simply aren't legendary and are therefore mostly irrelevant.

However, that's not the case with Marvel Super Heroes, as this set as well as its accompanying Commander and Jumpstart products are almost entirely composed of legendary creatures. And yet, there are a whopping sixteen legendary creatures–all from these supplemental non-Standard legal products–that don't even have a single deck built for them on EDHREC, a popular site for posting deck lists. If that's the case, then it begs the question, why even print these legendary creatures if they're not good enough to even see casual play?

Unplayable Commanders

The simple answer is that most of these cards aren't intended to be played outside of introducing new players to the game. They are incredibly simple by design. However, I think the dissonance comes from the fact that they are legendary rather than regular creatures, and we're used to expecting more out of our legendary creatures. Afterall, legendary means it's a named character, you can only have one in play at a time–it must be important. So to see a well known character show up on a card only for it to have below rate stats and a singular keyword is a bit of a let down. Even if they didn't intend for it to be playable, there is still an expectation. With all that out of the way, let's take a look at these disappointing cards.

Hey look, it's that guy who runs fast! He has haste, that's clever. Don't pay attention to the fact that he's worse than Volcanic Villain, a card from the main set that is totally unplayable.

This one is at least interesting, and it would have been nice to see this card in the main set where it would have at least been useful in draft. Sadly, it's nearly useless as a commander, and likely won't be in anyone's 99 either.

There's not much to say about this one other than it's a worse version of Siegehorn Ceratops by a pretty wide margin.

The only thing that's impressive about this card is how they manage to keep printing more and more Spider-Men. You'd think they would've run out of names by now.

This one is actually a little surprising. It's one of the few cards on this list that's a rare, and it seems to have fine stats for its cost. Unfortunately, its ability is incredibly narrow, especially in blue, a color that doesn't particularly care about Heroes. Oh well, you know what they say: You winsome you lose some.

Again, this is a card that would be more at home in a draft format rather than whatever Jumpstart product this is a part of. I suppose it's perfectly fine there too, it's just disappointing that no one will ever play it anywhere other than in Jumpstart. Does anyone play Jumpstart?

This is another outlier, and it is another one of the only rares on this list. The reason it's not helming any decks is not because it's inherently weak as much as it is because it's designed to be in the 99. It's ability only works if you have a different commander, and so it's not without a home. This card is fine.

This is a creature with Char stapled to it. That's about all there is to say. It would have been fine in the main set, but here it will never see play and so it might as well not exist.

Surprisingly, this card is kind of…. okay? It's narrow, but maybe there is an aggressive enough low power Hero deck that might want this. I don't know. In any case, it's no Vampire Nighthawk

Big and boring. This is nothing special. I'm running out of things to say about these cards. All I feel is apathy. I wonder if that's their intention.

At least this effect is a little bit interesting. Maybe you'll play this in a big creature stompy kind of deck, but there are lots of cards that do the same thing better.

It's a four mana 6/6 with flying if you've sacrificed something this turn. That's just not where you want to be these days. Sorry Nefaria.

It has power-up, but it's also powerfully boring. Again, all I feel is apathy towards this card.

Such a great character on such a boring, weak card. It's a shame really.

Waiter, waiter! More weak sauce please!

Did you know Thor had a secret identity? I sure didn't. And because no one is ever going to play this card, his identity will continue to be a secret.

Future Of Bulk

Is it over? Is it done? That sure was a lot of crap to wade through, and I'm sure we'll be getting plenty more crap with the next set. Because of the increased amount of Universes Beyond and supplemental products, it feels like there is a never-ending slew of totally irrelevant legendary creatures, and it starts to make you question why they need to exist. At any rate, you can change this list if you want. All you have to do is make a singular deck on EDHREC and you will be the only person to have a deck for that commander! Otherwise, say goodbye to these cards, because I guarantee that you will never see them again.
