Magic's Lord of the Rings crossover brought one of the strongest MTG cards in recent memory: The titular The One Ring, which is so strong that it had to be banned in Modern and is a Game Changer in Commander.

It looks like now casual players have discovered a sort of “Ring at Home”, brought to us by Edge of EternitiesCounter Intelligence Commander precon: Insight Engine…

Insight Engine

… which went up in price more than ten times since last week!

As one of the cards from the Counter Intelligence Commander Precon, Insight Engine has always been pretty much an auto-include with either Kilo, Apogee Mind or Inspirit, Flagship Vessel in the command zone. By itself, it's not exactly awesome; but charge counters are its cheat code. When you have any sort of counter synergy, or proliferate cards that let you stack charge counters faster, it's a pretty good draw engine. As such, this blue artifact managed to stay over $1 since it got printed in Edge of Eternities.

But it went into overdrive last week, jumping a silly 1300% to over $13 for near-mint copies:

The tide seems to be turning a bit, though, with the occasional near-mint copy selling for a lot less, so it looks like the price will stabilize much lower than $13… but still a lot higher than the one buck you would have paid a week ago.

Why Is Insight Engine Spiking?

Insight Engine‘s price spike looks like an interesting combo: A card that everybody saw as “The One Ring at home” when it was revealed four months ago, but which was too at home to be adopted by cEDH players… and that now content creators and casual players have rediscovered, and have been very happy to do so.

“So it's sort of The One Ring at home,” noted u/SladeWeston four months ago. “That seems very good. Sure you don't get the protection, but you also don't accidently kill yourself with it. This feels like it could be one of the better rares.”

“The one ring if wizards knew about balance,” joked u/WinAware1737

Gaboleps‘s art was also widely praised, but the overall consensus among cEDH players was that Insight Engine was very, very far away from being the return of The One Ring, and for months it was just a good synergy card in your Inspirit, Flagship Vessel deck.

That would have been the whole story of Insight Engine if it wasn't for a sudden (and huge!) spike of interest last week, apparently sparked by Magic content creator Ben Bateman in an Instagram reel, calling it a one-buck Ring:

And, besides this recent hype, Insight Engine has quietly found two new homes: it's being widely adopted with Spider-Man‘s Lady Octopus, Inspired Inventor in the command zone, and it has found some modest success in cEDH, most recently under the command of Urza, Lord High Artificer.

What Will Happen With Insight Engine's Price?

In this case we don't need our usual caveat that this is not investment advice because the answer is pretty clear: “Who knows?”

MTG players saw the parallels between Insight Engine and The One Ring as soon as it was revealed, so being “The Ring at home” is not really news. And the initial assessment from the cEDH community was spot on: even Insight Engine can find its way into a cEDH deck, nobody has found a way to break the card just yet.

With that in mind, you'd expect this to just be a fluke and prices return to normal real fast…

… but, then again, it would still be a very big fluke: If you follow the MTG card market then you know that a new card spiking 200%-300% is already quite rare; over 1000% is just bonkers. And the demand seems pretty organic here, with tens of copies traded daily on TCGplayer.

Perhaps the “at home” part is actually a plus among casual Commander players?
