We may not have a Magic-focused MMORPG just yet, but with Foundations MTG players will at long last be able to enjoy one of the comfiest pleasures in multiplayer video gamesโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ fishing!

Revealed a few hours ago by MTG's official Japanese X account, Foundations will introduce a one-mana colorless artifact with a built-in fishing minigame.

A translation from MTGGoldfish, which checks out with how Scryfall translates the same card, says:

โ€œFishing Rodโ€

Artifact โ€” Equipment

Equipped creature has โ€œ, , Tap Fishing Rod: Put a bait counter on โ€œFishing Rodโ€.โ€œ

Whenever the equipped creature becomes untapped, remove a bait counter from this equipment. If you do, create a 1/1 blue Fish creature token.

Equip (: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery.)

While this is not exactly a full fishing mini-game as you may expect from pretty much every MMO and single-player RPG out there, like Red Dead Redemption 2โ€ฆ

โ€ฆ โ€œFishing Rodโ€ does bring a comfy bobbing motion, requiring you to tap your would-be fisher to cast the line, then untap it to catch the fish.

Fishing Efficiency

And, like everything in Magic, it gets better with more cards!

One obvious play is having a way to untap your permanents and generate a good chunk of mana, which you can sink into โ€œFishing Rodโ€ to catch yourself a whole school of fish tokens.

But the most fun may be pairing this Foundations equipment with one of the lesser-known Class Enchantments from Bloomburrow: Fisher's Talent.

Fisher's Talent

With both cards in play and Fisher's Talent at level 2, your skinny 1/1 Fish tokens become 3/3 Sharks instead. And at level 3, those Sharks become 8/8 blue Octopuses (Octopi?) that would make any sea creature commander proud.

We don't know yet if Foundations will have more fish-matters cards โ€“ FDN reveals started in earnest last Friday, and will continue all this week โ€“ but from now on Magic players need not switch to an RPG whenever they feel like enjoying a bit of fishing!
