I don’t know about you, but I love love. Don’t you just love love? It’s a quintessential human emotion, whether it’s love for your friends, family, romantic partner(s), or that one hot rival that has something you want.
So I thought today would be a great opportunity to celebrate love (and power duos) in the MTG world! From canon couples to unbreakable family bonds to my own crackship wishes, let’s dive into the planes of the Multiverse to find some of the most adorable, interesting, and/or heartwarming displays of love (real or potentially unhinged) in Magic!
#14. Feldon of the Third Path x His Mechanical Wife
“She will come back to me.”
Well, isn’t this just… heartwarming? Heartbreaking? Potentially disturbing? You decide!
I choose to see Feldon of the Third Path as a display of unwavering love and devotion. His wife may be gone, but is death truly an obstacle? Not if you have a knack for mechanical engineering and the will to bring her back, apparently!
#13. Gisa and Geralf Cecani
“These fiends are slightly less tolerable than you.”
“A sentiment that warms my heart, sister.”
Aw, don’t you just love seeing siblings come together in the face of a common enemy? Sibling solidarity with just a hint of disdain; we love to see it.
I’m an only child by birth, but found family can be a powerful thing. My older sister is a pain in the ass, sure, but at the end of the day there’s no one else I’d rather face down a horde of undead ghouls with. Gisa and Geralf get that.
#12. Sen Triplets x Triad of Fates
They are the masters of your mind.
Sen Triplets
Okay, okay, hear me out. What do you get when you put two sets of three women that hold unfathomable sway over those that cross them together? Three incredibly powerful power couples, that’s what.
I just feel like the Sen Triplets would get along with the Triad of Fates, that’s all. And who doesn’t love to see powerful women come together to defeat their enemies?
#11. Hanna x Gerrard Capashen
Hanna and Gerrard’s story is both heartwarming and tragic, but may I just entice you with: friends to lovers to enemies(ish) to lovers? Their story doesn’t have a very happy ending, but I still think they’re sweet.
Besides, don’t we all love a little angst with our love stories?
#10. Jace Beleren x Vraska
For a bittersweet moment, Jace believed he could still save his love. A moment was all Vraska needed. “For the glory of Phyrexia,” she whispered.
I’m gonna be honest, I had absolutely no idea that Jace and Vraska were together until All Will Be One. Which says more about how much I keep up with the details of Magic’s story, but still.
Spoiler alert: it doesn’t end well. Understatement of the year, really. More like it ends heart-wrenchingly tragically. Which is a bit sad, because I just found out they were a couple and now they’re compleated.
I guess they’re still together, at least? Silver linings, I suppose.
#9. Liliana Vess and Her Dance Partner
Liliana is never one to follow someone else’s lead.
I really wanted to talk about the undead couple on Ever After today, but I had to draw the line somewhere. We don’t even know either of their names. At least with Macabre Waltz we know Liliana Vess.
And, like, calm down before you start yelling about her dance partner’s undead status, or how they’re only part of this dance thanks to Liliana’s talent for reanimation. It just seems like they’re having a fun time and I wanna join them.
#8. Edgar Markov x Olivia Voldaren
“Here you go. Can’t have you sleeping through your own wedding day.”
I gotta respect the power moves at play here (love of power is a kind of love, okay?). Edgar isn’t quite the all-powerful patriarch he used to be, and Olivia knew that. It’s what makes this unholy union so impressive.
And considering the fact that both Olivia and Edgar escaped the assault of their wedding with their undeath, I for one can’t wait to see them return to claim their true place as the leaders of Innistrad’s vampiric population. We all know who’d really be in charge, though.
#7. Elspeth Tirel x Daxos of Meletis
If you thought that Jace and Vraska were tragic, wait until I tell you about Elspeth and Daxos.
To make a long story short, the two denied their feelings for each other for a while. Just when they finally realized them, the Theros god Xenagos tricked Elspeth into killing Daxos in her sleep. She later tried to exchange her own life for Daxos’ but was killed by Heliod, resulting in a cruel bargain with Erebos that left him trapped while Elspeth took his place in the Underworld.
They met one final time before Elspeth planeswalked away to aid in the fight against the Phyrexians, and Daxos was elevated to demigodhood. Elspeth seems to have sacrificed herself to prevent the Sylex from devastating countless planes, potentially finding the peace she’s been seeking for so long, while Daxos is trapped in unfeeling servitude to his imprisoned god.
I’m not crying, you’re crying. Shut up. Let’s just move on, okay?
#6. Saheeli Rai x Huatli
Saheeli and Huatli meeting again on Ravnica in Note for a Stranger is the most adorably-awkward lesbian interaction I’ve ever seen. I won’t spoil anything beyond that because you really should read it for yourself.
Suffice it to say that there’s flirting, notes on a bulletin board, and it’s cute as hell and I love them.
#5. Nissa x Chandra
I’m not here to linger on the nonsense that was War of the Spark: Forsaken. I’d much rather talk about how cute Nissandra would be. Like, come on, sapphic fire- and earth-focused planeswalkers? Yes please, give it to me now. Yesterday, even.
Nissandra is love, Nissandra is life. Fight with the wall.
#4. Kynaois x Tiro
The histories speak of two feuding rulers whose deaths were celebrated and whose monuments symbolized the end of their wars. In truth they were peaceful lovers, their story lost to the ages.
Guardians of Meletis
If being mistaken for enemies in history’s depiction of you when really you were lovers isn’t the most iconically queer thing, I don’t know what is. We’ve seen it time and time again in our own history books, so why would Magic be an exception?
Jokes aside, Kynaois and Tiro are truly a couple for the ages. Even if Guardians of Meletis is meant to be a representation of their feud, at least they’ll be side by side forever.
#3. Jin-Gitaxias x Elesh Norn
All right, before you freak out, just listen. Wouldn’t Jin-Gitaxias and Elesh Norn be the ultimate power couple? Before you yell at me, just know that I’m not the only one that thinks so:
#2. Kiora and Marit Lage
I’m not here to debate this one. Like, just look at Kiora, the Tide’s Fury. Look at her. Magali Villeneuve has a way with powerful women, that’s all I’m saying. Not to mention that Kiora is also known as “Behemoth Beckoner” and “Master of the Depths.”
I just feel like Kiora would really appreciate Marit Lage, okay? Ultimate power duo. No one would be safe (and why would you want to be?)
#1. Bruna and Gisela
Upon discovering what had become of her sisters, Sigarda could only weep.
I don’t really have an excuse for this one. Bruna and Gisela being Eldrazi-fied by Emrakul and melded together into a horrifying amalgamation of angel and Eldrazi is admittedly horrifying. But honestly? That’s right up my alley.
And, like, I just think Brisela, Voice of Nightmares is neat.
Love Shook My Heart
Wedding Announcement | Illustration by Caroline Gariba
Aw, aren’t they all just so adorable? Look at all the love in the air! There’s absolutely no heartbreaking endings or marriages of convenience here, only pure love, happy endings, and exceptional familial bonds.
Who’s your favorite couple or duo in Magic? Are you more of a fan of power duos, or is real devotion more your style? And how about all that angst? Happy endings, sad endings, bittersweet endings? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below or over in the Draftsim Discord. I never have any plans ever, so I’ll definitely be around to chat about your most unhinged ships.
All right, well, I’m off to make my cat a four-course meal and replace genuine human connection with unattainable fictional relationships. Happy Valentine’s!

How could you leave out Halana and Alena?
I’m sorry, I had to make some cuts and difficult decisions. They deserve better tbh
And what about Rin and Seri, Inseparable? I think they should be nr. 1
You know what you’re 100% right. Truly a grievous oversight on my part, I hope you can forgive me 🙏
