Josh Lee Kwai and Jimmy Wong of the Command Zone YouTube channel dropped a bombshell on a random Thursday afternoon: Coming off the heels of a conversation with Hasbro representatives, the two Command Zone hosts announced the partnering of Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment, who intend to produce a live action Magic: The Gathering feature film. According to the announcement, there's also the intention to follow up that film with a โtelevisionโ universe of some sort. In other words, Magic is coming to the big screen!
What We Know
No real details were given about the intent of the film, and as the Command Zone hosts were gracious enough to point out, there probably won't be any details for quite a while. The entire project is in conception phase, and the news is simply an announcement of the partnership between two entertainment companies.
However, one of those is Legendary Entertainment, whose productions include juggernauts like The Dark Knight, Pacific Rim, and 2015's Jurassic World. More recently, you might recognize their name from movies like Dune: Part Two and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. These are colossal titles, and puts the potential for a Magic: The Gathering movie on a pretty large pedestal.
Many people were quick to point out 2023's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves as an example of this exact type of product being a success. Though produced by Paramount Pictures, the D&D movie was a hit, and what is Magic if not just D&D with more cowboy hats as of late?
What About That Netflix Show?

Apparently, it's still happening? The supposed Netflix MTG adaptation that's been tossed around for the last few years is not being scrapped or reworked for this newer, upcoming adaptation, though it's also being created in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment. Of course, this is intended to be an animated series, whereas the new announcements are all geared towards live-action.
The last major news about the Netflix show came around September of last year, where it was confirmed to be under new direction. Who knows: Maybe it'll release before the Legendary Entertainment adaptation gets here.
So, exciting news for fans of MTG and cinema, but there's still one burning question that needs to be answered: Who's going to play Loot in the live-action film?
