At long last, Magic's Standard rotation is upon us!

Edge of Eternities has brought along Spacecraft, Eldrazi and Slivers cameos, and a batch of new mechanics. But as it is the way with Standard, some old things need to go: starting this week, premier MTG sets older than Wilds of Eldraine are no longer Standard-legal.

Which, for most Standard players, means finding out what new cards will replace rotated staples. It's still way too early to tell how the Standard metagame will shape up in the coming weeks. EOE has been out for barely four days on digital platforms (namely MTGO and MTGA) and it releases on tabletop today. But between pre-release events and online play there's already a bit of data to look into some of the cards that could shape up the game for the next three years.

Ripping the Seam

In pretty much every MTG since forever, White gets an O-ring effect โ€“ that's MTG lingo for cards that resemble Oblivion Ringโ€˜s effect and exile another permanent for as long as they remain on the field.

More often than not they just see play in Draft and are not good enough to make the cut into Standardโ€ฆ but Edge of Eternititesโ€˜ Seam Rip is built differently:

Seam Rip

โ€œHoly smokes, might be the most important card in the set for 60-card constructed,โ€ noted u/arotenberg as soon as this white enchantment was revealed, โ€œand they just dropped it in a random gallery update.โ€

Portable Hole

Beautifully illustrated by Sam Guay and bringing back an oldschool Magic vibe, Seam Rip has a very clear predecessor: It has the same cost and text as Portable Hole, which saw quite a bit of competitive play in Esper Aggro decks back in New Capenna Standard, so there's solid precedent of this effect at being relevant.

And, unlike Portable Hole, Seam Rip is an enchantment instead of an artifact. This change of card type seems very relevant in this Standard meta, since enchantments dodge Temporary Lockdownโ€˜s replacement: Pinnacle Starcage.

Pinnacle Starcage

What's more, both white cards play very well together: you can play Pinnacle Starcage on turn three without setting free whatever Seam Rip trapped on turn two. โ€œplays super well with Pinnacle Starcage and will probably be a staple for its entire standard lifespan,โ€ predicted u/fjklsdhglksj.

As of this week, Azorius () Control, which was already very strong pre-rotation, is one of the archetypes that is putting Seam Rip, using between 2-4 main deck copies.

But there's also a new iteration of Esper Aggro which is back in the menu, with Seam Rip in the sideboardโ€ฆ but four maindeck copies of another 1-mana removal from Edge of Eternities: Tragic Trajectory.ย

Tragic Trajectory

Depending what was your pre-rotation stance on Black removal, right you're either crying bitterly, or sipping from a cup full of delicious, swampy tears. Black decks were hit hard by rotation, losing what was arguably Standard's most efficient piece of removal in a long time, Cut Down. And also losing two other crucial bits of interaction: Go for the Throat, and Anoint With Affliction

EOE doesn't really enough cards to fill such a black hole, so swampy players will have to scrap by with what they have. And the best option right now seems to be Tragic Trajectory:

The base rate is a Sorcery-speed Stab, which is definitely not the most impressive presentation card. It does kill Llanowar Elves and, if caught early, also deals with the newest, cutest 1-drop Standard menace, Sazh's Chocoboโ€ฆ

โ€ฆ but Stab never made the cut pre-rotation, and doesn't seem to be shining right now.

But then there's the Void mode, when Tragic Trajectory can remove pretty much anything in Standard for just .

Dimir Aggro decks (which were the most popular archetype pre-rotation) and Esper Aggro (an updated version of Pixie/Bounce decks), which this early on seem to be the most promising black-leaning decks, are both experimenting with 3-4 copies of Tragic Trajectory in the main deck.
