We've seen Varina, Lich Queen spike already due to demand for upgrades to the Eternal Might zombie precon, so it's no surprise to see other zombies shambling in tow. Diregraf Colossus is the latest zombie to see a price spike, with its cost having tripled since early January! As of today, a Midnight Hunt Commander printing will run you about $12, with the original printing going for about a dollar more.

Diregraf Breakdown

Diregraf Colossus

Diregraf Colossus itself is a simple but powerful creature that is of course all about zombies. It actually had the power level to see some Standard play back in the day, alongside Cryptbreaker and some other cards from Shadows Over Innistrad. One of Colossus's primary strengths is its flexibility; either you play it early and get a constant stream of 2/2s, or play it later as a huge beater. In EDH though, the first option is generally going to better, as a huge Colossus is more liable to being chumped than in Standard.

So why the price spike? Two pretty obvious reasons, or omissions, rather. First, the card was not included in the Eternal Might Commander precon, which makes sense giving the Innistrad-specific name. Second, the card was also absent from Innistrad Remastered, which would've been the most likely place to see it reprinted this year. Again, given the presence of โ€œDiregrafโ€ in the card name, it's unlikely the zombie giant will see a Standard reprint any time soon, so being absent from two likely supplementary sets where it might have been reprinted definitely started to move the price up.

Aside from the original 2016 printing in Shadows over Innistrad, the only other paper copies of the card were printed in 2021's Midnight Hunt Commander set, so it's somewhat scarce relative to the demand for the card right now.

Fitting Diregraf Into the Precon

If you are upgrading Eternal Might, check out this full budget upgrade guide! Note that Diregraf Colossus was not included as a swap in that guide, so if you wish to add it, you'll need a cut. Try subbing this in over Oath of Jace first if you need a slot, as the list gets discard naturally from Temmet, Naktamun's Will and has just one planeswalker. Of course, you'll have to break the Amonkhet immersion if you want to include this Innistrad card in the precon.

Shambling Towards the Future

On the other hand, if you're in no rush to build zombie EDH, feel free to wait a month or two before picking up staples. Demand for Eternal Might upgrades will eventually dip, and cards like Varina, Lich Queen and Diregraf Colossus should drop at least a couple of bucks. It's ultimately your call whether or not you want to play with zombies now, but if you do, definitely give Diregraf Colossus a try!
