If you've been paying attention to the Magic card market in the last few weeks, you're probably well aware of the huge impact that Final Fantasy x MTG had on prices. So if you were to learn that Oboro Breezecaller, a blue creature from an old set, is currently trending up, you may guess it's spike is related to some Final Fantasy commander โ and very likely due to Vivi Ornitier or Y'shtola, Night's Blessed.
Not this time, though!
Oboro Breezecaller, a blue common from Saviors of Kamigawa that never cost more than twenty cents in its life, has been creeping up to more than triple in price in the last monthโฆ

The reason? While Oboro Breezecaller sees very little play in lower-bracket Commander tables, it happens to be a cEDH powerhouse, and gaining traction.
Why Is Oboro Breezcaller Spiking?
While everybody's favorite cat warlock from Final Fantasy has nothing to do with this particular price spike, the cat is out of bag about Oboro Breezecaller being a core piece of an infinite mana combo powerful enough to show up at the top of major cEDH tournaments:

โGaeaโs Cradle decks are hot right now,โ says Scotty Baker, a cEDH competitor and content creator from AMPโd Gaming. โAlso Yoshi/Thras and Tymna/Thras.โ
Usually seen in Rograkh + Thrasios decks, and sometimes with Thrasios + Yoshimaru in the lead, Oboro Breezecaller has been on a tear this year in top-tier tournaments cEDH players adopted it en masse by around March this year.
A redditor from r/CompetitiveEDH, asc_yeti, summed it up perfectly: โInstant speed infinite mana with no spell cast, and all 3 cards are never dead in a cradle shell.โ
The infinite-mana combo usually pairs Oboro Breezecaller with Modern Horizons 3โs Talon Gates of Madara, and Commander staple Gaea's Cradle:
Here's how the Oboro-Talon-Cradle works step by step:
Activate Gaea's Cradle by tapping it โ you need to add at least . Then, activate Talon Gates of Madara's first ability, add 1. Then activate Oboro Breezecaller by paying and returning Talon Gates of Madara from the battlefield to your hand, untapping Gaea's Cradle. Now activate Talon Gates of Madara's third ability by paying 4, putting it from your hand onto the battlefield. When Talon Gates of Madara enters the battlefield, it triggers and phases out up to one target creature. Repeat to endlessly phase all of your opponents' creatures.
While this combo sees a lot of play in cEDH decks, it's a three-card combo and therefore you could play it Bracket #3 and Bracket #4 decks. It won't fit on Brackets #1 and #2 given that Gaea's Cradle is a game changer, though.
What Will Happen With Oboro Breezecaller's Price?

With the usual note that this is not investment advice (doing your own research is priceless!), a lot will depend on how much this infinite mana combo is adopted by more casual players. It's definitely a powerhouse in cEDH, but less than 0.2% of all Commander decks play this card, meaning it has a lot of room for adoption.
The other aspect is the card's condition: Oboro Breezecaller is a common with a single printing, from a fairly old set. Near mint copies are at a premium (sometimes doubling, and even tripling, the average price), and since the card is not too pricey overall, buyers seem willing to pay it to acquire a spotless card.
If you lean Simic and need some extra mana, you may want to snatch a copy of this cEDH staple before more players find out!
