Wizards has dropped a teaser for the next Secret Lair Superdrop on X: The Corn Maze Superdrop will land October 12, and it collaborates with several major entertainment properties, including KPop Demon Hunters, Marvel, and The Jim Henson Company/Labyrinth Enterprises.
Though those properties aren’t featured in the teaser images, the legal disclaimers on the bottom of the post gave the game away:
Just because we know what the properties are doesn’t mean we can’t still speculate on what might come.
How Many Drops Could The Superdrop Contain?
Superdrops often contain five unique Secret Lair products offered in non-foil and foil, but this isn’t a hard-and-fast rule. For example, the Back to School Superdrop from earlier in the year had eight products, and the Rad Superdrop in January had four (though I highly doubt a crossover without properties like KPop Demon Hunters and Labyrinth would go so low).
Given that this has an October release date and is clearly Halloween-themed, the best comparison is last year’s Secret Scare Superdrop, also a Halloween product releasing about the same time. It had 10 unique drops, including several collaborative products and an artist’s series drop.
With multiple big properties sharing the spotlight for a Universes Beyond drop, I’d bet on more products than normal.
Will There Be New Cards?
While it’s impossible to make a declarative statement in speculation, I’m leaning towards no, or at least very few. Returning to the Secret Scare Superdrop as a template, it had just one unique card: The mono-red commander Jaws, Relentless Predator. Jaws has been very contentious for how Wizards printed it; because the Secret Lair was scarce, the card demands $150+ a copy. All other cards in the Superdrop were reprints. Given that this product was unpopular, it might steer Wizards away from mechanically unique cards.
Additionally, printing new cards usually only happens with very focused superdrops. For example, the Marvel Superdrop that introduced cards like Iron Man, Titan of Innovation and Captain America, First Avenger or the Sonic the Hedgehog Superdrop with Super State and Knuckles the Echidna. The new cards were the focus of these superdrops, while more generally-themed ones like Back to School and The Most Powerful Superdrop in the Universe stick to reprints, and maybe renaming a couple cards to better meet the property. Nothing can be ruled out, but I’d bet on reprints and reskins before a Saja Boys commander.
