MTG Arena Says Goodbye to Digital-Only Alchemy Format in 2027

MTG Arena's Alchemy format spawned in 2021 as a means to give players another home for cards that had recently rotated from Standard, while also allowing the developers to flex their design muscles and create cards that could only exist in the digital space. It was met with harsh criticism, which never really went away over time, despite the MTGA team continuing to pump out new Alchemy sets with every in-universe release.

That timeline is coming to a close next year, as WotC has announced the end of the Alchemy format, starting with the 2027 Standard rotation.

When Is Alchemy Being Removed?

According to MTG Arena's State of the Formats article, they'll be retiring Alchemy as a format “with the next Standard rotation in early 2027.” As a reminder, MTG is revamping its Standard rotation to align with the start of a new calendar year, beginning in 2027 (hence no Standard rotation happening in 2026).

The format will be officially taken down on February 2, 2027, which is the prerelease kick-off for Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, and also the Standard rotation period for MTG Arena.

There has been confirmation of an Alchemy set dropping on Arena for Reality Fracture, which will be the last Alchemy-related product we see before the format officially goes the way of Explorer. You can expect to see this batch of cards on October 13, 2026.

What Does This Mean for MTGA?

This news leads to a couple questions: How will various Alchemy-friendly formats be affected by the change, and what happens to the digital-only cards and rebalanced cards that exist on the client, especially ones people have invested wildcards into?

First off, existing digital cards will remain intact. They'll still be craftable and playable in every format they're currently legal in (Historic, Timeless, and non-Standard Brawl). They're not going anywhere, though they are still subject to rebalances or bannings in the future.

Rebalanced cards are a different story. On September 22, 2026, all rebalanced MTG cards with a tabletop equivalent will revert to their original printings. This is a nerf to many cards that were made better through rebalancing, but also a buff to cards that were previously toned down. As such, a few cards reverting to their more powerful versions will be banned:

• Galvanic Discharge banned in Historic.
• Guide of Souls banned in Historic.
• Nadu, Winged Wisdom banned in Historic and Brawl.
• Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord banned in Historic.
• The One Ring banned in Historic.

There may be some sort of reimbursement for cards that end up banned as a result of these changes, though there's no mention of wildcards in the announcement.

The announcement does, however, state that “we look forward to sending Alchemy off with a celebration in the coming weeks.” There's no details about what that means, but there might be some sort of Midweek Magic or free Alchemy events coming to MTGA for a brief period.

Alchemy went live in 2021 and never really captured the hearts of most MTG players, with many opposed to the concept of digital-only cards (especially ones as strong as the cards typically found in Alchemy sets). The 5-year project is coming to a close, which hopefully means more attention given to more widely-played formats.
