Reality Fracture (FRA) is the big finale to Magic’s current storyline arc, with familiar characters returning alongside alternate-reality versions of themselves as Jace's Echoverse collides with the Multiverse.
This makes Reality Fracture one of Magic's biggest releases of 2026 as far as the storyline goes. Whether FRA also turns out to be an all-timer for Limited (or more of a letdown, like The Hobbit…) is hard to say before we’ve seen the complete set, but there’s certainly enough going on here to make its Prerelease worth keeping an eye on.
So, what should you expect when Reality Fracture Prerelease arrives?
What Is the Reality Fracture Prerelease?

Reality Fracture is an MTG set built around the clash between the existing Multiverse and Jace’s Echoverse, an alternate reality shaped according to his idea of how things should be. It serves as the conclusion to the Metronome Arc and brings back plenty of familiar Magic characters, albeit sometimes in some very unfamiliar forms.
The Reality Fracture Prerelease is our first chance to crack open the new cards and actually play with them before the set’s full tabletop release on October 2, 2026.
What Format Is Prerelease?
Prerelease is primarily a Sealed event. You’ll open a Prerelease Pack containing six Reality Fracture Play Boosters, then use those cards plus as many basic lands as you need to build a deck with a minimum of 40 cards.
You’ll generally play several best-of-three matches afterward, with three rounds being common, although the exact structure depends on your local game store.
Some stores may also offer Two-Headed Giant Prerelease events, where you and another player build decks and compete together as a team against two other Magic players. It’s an excellent option if you want to experience a new set alongside a friend, partner, or family member rather than being thrown directly into 1v1 matches.
What Comes in a Prerelease Kit?
Each Reality Fracture Prerelease Kit contains:
- 6 Reality Fracture Play Boosters
- 1 traditional foil promo card
- 1 deck box
- 1 Spindown die
Every Reality Fracture Play Booster contains three cards from the set’s Echoed Pairs, including two cards that form an actual Echoed Pair. Echoed Pairs represent two versions of the same character or concept, one from the regular Multiverse and one from Jace’s Echoverse.
And in case this is your first Limited event: Your local store should also provide basic lands for deckbuilding, so you shouldn’t need to bring your own (unless you particularly want to!).
When Is Reality Fracture Prerelease Weekend?
According to Wizards of the Coast's official Prerelease – Reality Fracture article, Reality Fracture Prerelease events begin on Friday, September 25, 2026, with WPN stores allowed to schedule Prerelease events from that day through Thursday, October 1.
Bear in mind that most stores will probably concentrate their events during the traditional Fri-Sun Prerelease weekend of September 25-27, so those are the dates I’d check first if you’re looking for an event.
Where Can You Attend the Prerelease?
Reality Fracture Prerelease events are held at local game stores affiliated with the Wizards Play Network.
Finding one is pretty straightforward: Open Wizards’ Store & Event Locator and you can search for the WPN store closest to you (we have a step-by-step guide on finding MTG events near you, in case you have trouble with something).
You can also simply contact nearby game stores directly. Stores sometimes announce their Prerelease schedule through their own websites, social media pages, or Discord servers before everything appears in Wizards’ locator.
I’d also recommend downloading the Magic: The Gathering Companion App on Google Play or the App Store. Many stores use it to register players, enter event codes, post pairings, and report match results, so having everything set up beforehand saves everyone some fiddling around when the event starts.
Keep in mind that prereleases can get crowded. If your store lets you preregister (especially for the Saturday afternoon slots everyone and their grandmother wants to attend), doing so isn’t a bad idea.
Who Goes to Prereleases?
Pretty much everyone!
One of the cool things about Magic prerelease events is that the person sitting across from you could be playing their first in-store tournament… or their hundredth.
Competitive Limited players attend because they want an early look at the format. Commander players show up because they want new cards. Collectors want to crack the newest set. Returning players use Prerelease as an excuse to get back into paper Magic, and plenty of people are simply there because opening six packs and figuring out what in the Multiverse you’re supposed to build with them is fun!
If you’re interested in playing paper Magic but intimidated by competitive tournaments, this is about as friendly an entry point as you’re going to find.
Is Going to Prerelease Worth It?
If you enjoy Limited Magic and hanging out at your local game store, usually yes.
A typical Reality Fracture Prerelease should cost somewhere around $30-40 in the US, although stores set their own entry fees and prices can vary depending on location and prize support.
For context, Reality Fracture Play Boosters have an MSRP of $5.49 each, putting the six boosters in your Prerelease Pack at $32.94 before accounting for the foil promo, Spindown, deck box, or any boosters you might receive as prizes.
If all you want to do is crack boosters as efficiently as possible, perhaps simply buying sealed product makes more sense. But if you actually want to play with the cards and spend a fun bunch of hours with other Magic players as you all discover the set together, Prerelease is generally one of the better ways to spend release weekend.
Reality Fracture Prerelease Changes
Wizards of the Coast announced two prerelease changes coming with Reality Fracture, and one of them is especially important if you normally play Two-Headed Giant.
Two-Headed Giant Gets Smaller Sealed Pools
Previously, a Two-Headed Giant Prerelease team normally received two complete Prerelease Packs, giving the team 12 Play Boosters plus the two promotional cards to build its decks. Starting with Reality Fracture, Wizards’ recommended configuration changes to:
- 1 Reality Fracture Prerelease Pack
- 2 additional Reality Fracture Play Boosters
That gives the team eight Play Boosters total to build two 40-card decks from a shared card pool.
WotC says the smaller pool should make card selection more comparable to the regular 1v1 Prerelease experience, reduce the cost of participating as a pair, and bring Prerelease closer to the normal Magic Tournament Rules recommendation for Two-Headed Giant Sealed.
According to WotC's official article, the recommended prize support remains unchanged at two Play Boosters per participant.
At-Home Prerelease Is Going Away
Reality Fracture also marks the end of the official At-Home Prerelease program.
Wizards originally introduced At-Home Prerelease during COVID restrictions, allowing stores to count players taking kits home as Prerelease participation. Beginning with Reality Fracture, that event option is being retired worldwide now that in-store play has returned.
Importantly, this doesn’t mean you can’t buy a Prerelease Pack and take it home if you want to. WPN stores can still sell Prerelease Packs to customers during the Early Sales period. Those purchases simply won’t count as participation in a scheduled Prerelease event anymore.
FRA Draftsim Sealed Simulator & Spoilers
Want to get some reps in before Prerelease weekend?
Once the full Reality Fracture card list is available, the Draftsim Sealed Simulator will be updated with the complete set.
That lets you generate sample FRA Sealed pools and practice the most important part of Prerelease before you ever sit down at the store: figuring out which colors are deepest, identifying your bombs and removal, getting your mana curve under control, and turning six piles of booster-pack chaos into an actual 40-card deck.
In the meantime, keep an eye on Draftsim’s Reality Fracture spoiler page, which tracks every FRA card revealed throughout the preview season.
Wrap Up

Reality Fracture already has the ingredients for a memorable Prerelease: A major Magic storyline reaches its conclusion, we meet alternate versions of familiar characters, Echoed Pairs appear throughout every Sealed pool, and there remains the usual chaos of everyone trying to figure out a brand-new Limited environment at once.
