Weekend Secret Lair Leaks Include Unseen Monster Hunter Card

Recent leaks posted to Reddit by a WhatNot streamer have allegedly leaked basic lands from one or more Secret Lairs alongside cards from the canceled Secret Lair x Monster Hunter drops, including a previously undisclosed bonus card for the drop The Monsters II, a reskin of Armored Skyhunter:

What Are The Lands From?

The leaker, LandFork, claimed to have obtained these Secret Lair cards from “a Magic collection” they picked up several months prior. Based on a subsequent stream, they appear to have passed the T test, with a high likelihood of being real.

While most of the Monster Hunter cards were previously revealed, the Armored Skyhunter was unexpected. The lands have also not been previously shown.

It’s unclear where these lands are from, though they’re likely part of an undisclosed, possibly canceled, Secret Lair or two. Of the six basics, three were attributed to artist Max Naylor (a Forest, Plains, and Island) and three to artist Jack Teagle (a Swamp, Forest, and Mountain). Naylor has never drawn for Magic before but Teagle has been featured in several Secret Lair, including the Animar and Friends drop.

Given that three full-art basics were credited to each artist and there’s a duplicate Forest, it seems reasonable to assume these may be part of two Secret Lairs that were either canceled, like the Secret Lair they were found with, or haven’t been announced yet. It wouldn’t be the first Secret Lair to feature a set of basics by a single artist.

What Happened To The Monster Hunter Drop?

In 2025, Wizards announced a Secret Lair x Monster Hunter superdrop consisting of four individual secret Lairs: The Hunt, The Hunters, The Monsters, and The Monsters II (the one pictured in LandFork’s leak). While the crossover is perfect in concept as Monster Hunter is a major video game franchise, similar to other properties Wizards has crossed with like Assassin’s Creed or God of War, the lackluster execution received backlash from Monster Hunter fans.

One of the biggest issues was quality control, with typos such as the name “Kokoto” being misspelled as “Kotoko” on Champion of Kotoko. Players were also upset with the art, finding it often lackluster, but the biggest complaint had to do with the card value and lack of innovation.

Wizards hasn’t been shy about printing unique, original cards for their Secret Lair drops, including those for videos games. See Kratos, God of War from God of War, Aloy, Savior of Meridian from Horizon, or Ellie, Vengeful Hunter from The Last of Us. These were all unique legendary creatures printed for the Playstation x Secret Lair drop.

But the Monster Hunter drop received none of this; all 19 cards announced for the drop were reskins of existing cards. Additionally, most of the cards were low-value reprints of cards that either don’t see play or have just been reprinted into the ground. While there were a few notable cards, like Kalamax, the Stormsire and Grand Abolisher, these were the exception to the rule established by other cards. For example, Rathalos, one of the most iconic monsters from the games, reskinned Drakuseth, Maw of Flames—one of a million dime-a-dozen bulk rare dragons.

The project received so much backlash that Wizards canceled the Secret Lair roughly two weeks after the drop was announced. They choose to postpone the release because the drop “fell short of expectations,” announcing plans to “rework this Superdrop entirely,” with the promise of more information this year. Wizards hasn’t commented on the Superdrop since, nor indicated what the rework means.
