Whoa, seems like WotC just isn't going to stop with these spoilers! In a stunning surprise, a ton of Universes Beyond: Star Trek cards were just revealed. This is coming just days after all of Mystery Booster: Commander Edition was surprise spoiled, and just days before Universes Beyond: The Hobbit Prerelease.

60 brand new Star Trek cards are now floating around the internet, and one of them is an absurd reference to a classic Star Trek meme.

Khaaaaaaaaaaaannn!

Khan Scream

Captain Kirk in Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan

This card wins an award right out of the gate, we've never seen that many vowels in a row on an MTG card. But a little context first.

Devoted trekkies will remember when Captain Kirk lamented โ€œKhaaaaaaaaaaaannn!โ€ in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It's a truly ridiculous moment that, many would say, feels overdone on Shatner's part.

Regardless of any critique on his acting, the moment has become totally iconic in the Star Trek extended universe. And now? It's a Magic: The Gathering card.

Khaaaaaaaaaaaannn! The Card

Khaaaaaaaaaaaannn!

Props to Evan Shipard for absolutely nailing the energy here, and props to the WotC design team for printing a powerful instant speed burn spell!

Despite its meme value, this card is actually quite solid. Dealing twice x damage is no laughing matter, this thing will easily scale to deal with the biggest threats on the table.

Thanks to this massive early reveal, we know that we'll be seeing cards like Collective Drone. If these kinds of effects are going to be common in Star Trek, then Khaaaaaaaaaaaannn! will certainly be a good card in Star Trek Limited.

Truth be told, this is not a Commander card. In order for it to be worth running in your average Commander deck, it'd only be remotely good if it could target players as well. Howeverโ€ฆ

I am a huge fan of Rosheen, Roaring Prophet in the format. People never expect to see Metalworker for X-spells in the commanf zone. This card could be a powerful option in that deck as a sneaky option to take care of a massive threat.

It could also work well in Imodane, the Pyrohammer decks as well. Even if there's only a single 1/1 soldier token on the board, Imodane can turn Khaaaaaaaaaaaannn! into a game ending damage blast.

Khaaaaaaaaaaaannn! in Standard

This will be brief, but I don't think there's any way this card will be played in Magic's Standard format. It's just not effective enough against a swarm of earthbent forests or an army of 1/1 otters with prowess.

I'm ready to be proven wrong, mono-red has been a huge threat in the format in recent years, but I just don't see this one working.

Wrap Up

So this card's home is likely in Star Trek Limited. Exiling a threat at instant speed is quite solid. Its scalability means it can easily throw an opponent off their tempo in the early game, or completely wreck their biggest threat in the late game.

Plus, you're legally obligated to recreate Shatner's scream each time you cast Khaaaaaaaaaaaannn!, and if that isn't a reason to jam this card, then I don't know what is.
