Slay the Spire 2 has been out for about two weeks, and the mod community's already hard at work producing fan-made content for the game. Among the many mods for Mega Crit Games' hotly anticipated sequel is a Magic: The Gathering inspired mod that adds a new character and Phyrexian-themed abilities to the base game. Sounds sick, doesn't it?
โThe Compleatedโ Mod
โThe Compleatedโ is a mod developed by TheAlest and available for download on Nexus Mods. The mod uses the game's Necrobinder as a base for an entirely new character, The Compleated, who like any other character in Slay the Spire comes custom-equipped with their own package of thematically synergistic cards. The theme? Phyrexian abilities such as proliferate, oil, and infect. Poisonโs already a major part of the game thanks to The Silent, so everything else is a natural fit.

The Compleated's starting relic is โPhyrexian Scripturesโ, which distributes oil counters and plays into the character's theme of adding debuffs to enemies. There's a nice smattering of in-game mechanics that are put to good use here too, like doom and poison, which already exist across characters in Slay the Spire 2.
The developer boasts nearly 45 new cards that you can play with this mod, and there are some truly inspired designs here, using relevant Magic: The Gathering art that actually works quite well on the STS card template.

Some of my favorites are the cards that are basically 1:1 analogs for their MTG counterparts. Prologue to Phyresis gives each opponent a poison counter and cantrips, and that's exactly what it does in this mod, too, though it's completely free in the StS version (exhaust combos, anyone?). Inexorable Tide shows up as a power that proliferates on playing any card, which is remarkably similar to the MTG card as well. The cost is even high: 3 energy in StS might as well be 5 mana in MTG.

There are a couple others that really nailed the StS-to-MTG transformation, though their names were altered slighty, since presumable, Tezzeret and Atraxa aren't just randomly climbing the Spire (though who knows, maybe they are). Draw-2 + proliferate is exactly the text on Tezzeret's Gambit (reskinned as Betrayer's Gambit), and โEchoes of the Praetor's Voiceโ mimics the end step proliferate on Atraxa, Praetors' Voice.

Basically all of the proliferate designs hit the mark. Atomize and Ripples of Potential are some others that TheAlest managed to capture in StS form without losing much of their functionality in MTG.

Beyond the proliferate cards, there are some more liberal uses of mechanics like corrupt and oil counters, as well as a new mechanic in โdebilitateโ. And apologies to any MTG fans who saw โinfect 6โ in the image above and freaked out.

And in case you're a Slay the Spire purist who must have attacks and defends on every character, the mod's got you covered, using Sword of Once and Future as The Compleated's standard Strike card, and the Oath of the Gatewatch Negate art for Defends. For non-Slay players, every character's standard-issue starting deck begins with a pile of Strikes and Defends, and the early stages of the game are heavily balanced around these cards.

Important to remember that this is a player-made mod, so there will likely be some bugs and unintended gameplay issues, though based on comments from TheAlest it seems they're actively working to fix those.
BaseLib is required to play this mod, and the Nexus Mods post covers all the major permissions and credits required for downloading the mod, plus instructions on how to do that (I'm not much of a PC gamer, so I'll spare the attempt here).
It seems like โThe Compleatedโ will be receiving future updates as well, which is probably expected given Slay the Spire 2 is still pretty hot off the presses. There has always been an avid modding community surrounding the first game, and it's not too surprising to see people jump into fun, flavorful mods like this for the sequel.
