Riddle me this: Which is Edge of Eternities‘ most impactful card?

By play rate across two different Magic formats, it's a blue sphinx: Quantum Riddler

If you look at the price, it's not just Edge of Eternities‘ most impactful: Quantum Riddler has a very good chance of becoming the most expensive card in all of Standard.

And it keeps going up!

It's hardly news that Quantum Riddler is one of Edge of Eternities‘ best cards – as we reported back in July, Magic players across formats quickly realized that Quantum Riddler was a powerhouse, which pushed the price of this Standard rare to 30$ right after EOE was released:

Thing is, Quantum Riddler‘s average price has kept going up since then. While right now you can still get near-mint copies of the regular version for about $35-$40, in some occasions copies are traded in the $50-$60 range, making it one most expensive Magic cards you can play in Standard right now:

At the time of writing, the are about 10 copies listed for less than $50 on TCGplayer. But it's a card that trades about 30 copies per day on average, and there's just about 80 cards in stock (with many of them priced between $50 and $70), strongly suggesting the price will keep climbing.

Why Is Quantum Riddler Spiking?

Short answer: Because Quantum Riddler is a top-tier competitive card in two of Magic's most popular formats, Standard and Modern.

As noted above, Quantum Riddler‘s price went up to $30 in its first week in Standard. Izzet Vivi Cauldron (the most popular deck in the format, to the point that it will likely be banned in two weeks) quickly adopted it, which would have been enough to put a lot of pressure on its price.

But it was not just Vivi.

Although less successful, other Tier 2 blue decks like Simic Ouroboroid, Azorius Aggro, and Sultai Reanimator (the latter a new brew whic includes Superior Spider-Man) all play some copies of EOE's blue sphinx.

And then there's Modern, where Quantum Riddler has a similarly huge impact.

By mid-August, Magic's Hall of Famer Frank Karsten did a breakdown of The Modern Impact of Edge of Eternities, where Quantum Riddler was by far the EOE card with the highest playrate.

And two months later, the Pro Tour Edge of Eternities Modern Metagame Breakdown shows Quantum Riddler has the highest play rate in Modern from among all new cards since Bloomburrow.

In particular, Quantum Riddler is a four of in Esper Goryo's, which was the most popular deck the Edge of Eternities Modern Pro Tour, and sees play in Esper Blink, another popular archetype:

In other words: This is what a multi-format star looks like.

What Will Happen With Quantum Riddler's Price?

With our usual caveat that this is not investment advice (doing your own research is priceless!), Quantum Riddler is a multi-format staple in high demand, and current inventories are very low. For context, on TCGplayer you usually see 3-4 weeks' worth of inventory, when in this case the listed supply can only cover about 3 days of average demand.

There's very possible that, in Standard, Izzet Vivi will get a ban in two weeks, which would lower demand (given that Izzet Vivi is Standard's most-played deck). But Quantum Riddler has found some many homes in two different formats that it seems unlikely it won't find another one if Izzet Vivi is removed from the format.
