For decades, Magic: The Gathering enjoyers of all types have desperately searched for the best card protection for their dollar. We’ve set our top clear plastic scientists to work, devising the perfect combination of size, shape, and softness for card sleeves, and now the market is absolutely flooded with dozens of cheap options for sleeving up your deck.

With such a smorgasbord of options, a burgeoning planeswalker could be easily overwhelmed when faced with a wall of various brands and styles of cheap, clear sleeves.

Let’s dig into what makes good penny sleeves, and how to determine which brand is right for you!

What Are Penny Sleeves?

“Penny Sleeves” is a registered trademark of Ultra PRO’s soft trading card sleeves. Colloquially, though, Magic players refer to any cheap, clear-backed sleeves as “penny sleeves.”

Penny sleeves get their name from their cheap cost; it may not be true anymore, but you used to be able to pick up a pack of 100 of these bad boys for just over a dollar.

Penny sleeves can fit tightly or loosely, and depending on your preference, either is good. Tight sleeves, also known as “perfect fits,” are typically used as an inner sleeve when a player wishes to double-sleeve their cards for extra protection. Loose penny sleeves often leave up to an inch of extra space at the top to prevent damage to the top edge of the card. Some players prefer the taller sleeve, and some don’t.

Since penny sleeves are untextured, they’re notoriously finicky when attempting to shuffle large quantities. They’ll usually be fine for decks up to 60 cards, but they can become a pain when covering an entire 100-card Commander deck.

Importantly, since penny sleeves are almost exclusively clear-backed, they’re not the preferred card protection choice for competitive players. Since you can clearly see the backside of the cards along with any slight imperfections, it can be considered cheating if a player tries to “read” the next card they’ll draw based on the condition of the card back.

Best Overall

Ultra Pro Soft Trading Card Penny Sleeves

The Ultra PRO 2.5” x 3.5” Soft Trading Card Penny Sleeves are the best bang-for-your-buck when it comes to cheap, clear-backed, soft sleeves. Despite costing a whole two pennies per sleeve, these are still the cheapest on the market and get the job done right. You don’t need a lot of bells and whistles when it comes to these; you just want a sleeve that covers your card and will withstand a bit of shuffling for cheap.

Buyer’s Guide

There are several important factors when considering which penny sleeves are right for you.

Most importantly, you’ll want your penny sleeves to fit your actual cards. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re a Magic player (or shopping for someone who is!), so you should prioritize sleeves that advertise that they can fit those cards. Magic cards are 2.5” by 3.5”, and most penny sleeves are designed with this in mind. But be aware there are different sizes out there!

Next, consider whether you want your sleeves to be “perfect fits” or loose. The advantage of the perfect fit sleeves is they can slide into another larger sleeve for double the protection. The larger sleeves, while not as tight-fitting, still get the job done and are serviceable on their own for gameplay and sorting.

You’ll want some idea of how many penny sleeves you need before purchasing. Many penny sleeves, like Ultra PRO's original Penny Sleeves, come with 100 in a pack – enough for your average Commander deck. Purchasing one 100-sleeve pack at a time can be costly if you’re looking to sleeve up an entire collection of unused rares or a 720-card Cube. Some brands offer a better deal on 1,000+ sleeve bundles.

Ultimately, you’ll want to consider the purpose of your penny sleeves. If you’re like me, you’re constantly slamming your bulk cards into different casual 60-card decks or Commander decks to desperately playtest them at the table as soon as possible. Keeping a collection of random penny sleeves around is the perfect solution for me – I can sleeve up a new deck without having to purchase more sleeves (thus saving me the anguish of determining exactly which color of sleeve fits my deck theme as a whole). This is how I make a soft commitment to any janky deckbuild I’ve just completed. If the deck survives a few rounds of playtesting at the kitchen table, it graduates into a fully-sleeved deck with some nice Dragon Shields.

The other most common use for penny sleeves is as protection for your bulk rares. It can feel disrespectful to just toss that unused Siege Rhino into your bulk box with no protection, after all the good times you had together in Khans block, so maybe the little extra protection is worth it. And, who knows? Maybe Siege Rhino will return to defining the meta again, and you’ll be sitting pretty with four Near Mint copies ready to ship off to a lucky TCGplayer customer.

When shopping for penny sleeves, it’s best to avoid any with reviews that mention easy splitting. Soft sleeves aren’t built to last, but they shouldn’t split open after a single shuffle. Magic players are known for the “mash” style of deck shuffling, and if you want to fit in with the rest of us, you’ll need a set of sleeves that can withstand that sort of punishment.

Finally, don’t forget to consider the price! These are penny sleeves; they’re not meant to last! They’re a quick pick up at your LGS for when you need to sleeve up your Draft deck, or for sleeving up a deck for playtesting and shuffling at home. There’s no world where a pack of 100 sleeves purchased for a penny each will last you forever, so try not to over-invest in a product that’s not built (or intended) to last.

Ultra Pro

Ultra PRO’s 2.5” x 3.5” Soft Trading Card Penny Sleeves are the original soft penny sleeves. Or, so they claim. For $1.99, Ultra PRO offers 100 of these clear-backed and soft-sided sleeves. That’s technically more than a penny each, but in today’s economy we won’t be able to do much better.

These sleeves have the traditionally loose penny sleeve feel and leave about 3/16 of an inch of space at the top. This does make them difficult to shuffle at times, and shuffling them can cause some light jostling to the sleeved cards, making them lay off-center from one another when you stack them all up. They also tend to split at about the same rate as most other penny sleeves. Ultra PRO’s penny sleeves are nothing special, but they’re not awful, and when it comes to penny sleeves, functionality is key.

Ultimate Guard

Supreme UX 3rd Skin Sleeves

Ultimate Guard sells two different products I’d classify as penny sleeves.

The first is their Supreme UX 3rd Skin Sleeves. These act as over-sleeves for cards that have already been sleeved with both an inner and outer sleeve. These clear plastic sleeves are soft and malleable, and they’re designed to protect the outer sleeve from dust, damage, and scratches. They work perfectly well as loose-fit sleeves without any inner lining as well and are available on Amazon.

  • They are the 3rd skin for any standard-sized gaming cards, like Magic the Gathering(TM), Pokemon(TM) and others

Board Game Sleeves

The second is Ultimate Guard’s Board Game Sleeves. If you have any tabletop board game-obsessed friends, you might have seen these before. Typically used to sleeve up the cards included in games like Gloomhaven or Thunderstone, there’s no reason you can’t use these for Magic cards. The fit might be a little wonky, but most penny sleeves have a wonky fit, anyways. These sleeves are also available on Amazon.

Dragon Shield

Dragon Shield sells two products that fall under the penny sleeves umbrella: perfect fit sleeves, and their clear classic sleeves.

Dragon Shield perfect fit sleeves

Dragon Shield’s perfect fit sleeves are best used as inner sleeves. They’re available as both toploader and sideloaders, as well. A pack of 100 perfect fit clear Dragon Shields sells for about $6.

2 Packs Dragon Shield Inner Sleeve Clear Standard Size 100 ct Card Sleeves Individual Pack Perfect Fit X2 Standard Size
  • SUPERIOR CARD PROTECTION: Dragon Shield Sleeves provide robust defense for your trading cards, shielding them from scratches, wear, and tear, thereby preserving their value and longevity.
Clear Classic Sleeves

For a higher quality clear sleeve, Dragon Shield also offers Clear Classic Sleeves. These clear sleeves come with the matte back that comes standard with many other brands’ sleeves. The matte finish makes them easier to shuffle, but you pay the price for it. These sleeves cost the same as any of Dragon Shield’s other mainline Classic sleeves at $12.50, making them way too expensive to be considered penny sleeves. However, if you’re interested in some clear-backed sleeves that are built to last, these are a good choice.

Vault X

Vault X’s Soft Card Sleeves

Vault X’s Soft Card Sleeves are some of my personal favorite penny sleeves. As far as soft, clear-backed sleeves go, these are the best. They’re 66mm by 92mm, making them ever-so-slightly larger than the traditional 2.5” by 3.5” sleeves offered by Ultra PRO. This extra space gives the cards a little more breathing room, and, in my opinion, makes them easier to handle and shuffle.

The biggest selling point for Vault X’s penny sleeves is their longevity. About a year ago, I was given a pack of Vault X penny sleeves, and since then I’ve used them to playtest multiple decks. It’s an astonishing achievement if a pack of penny sleeves lasts you longer than a single deck, never mind multiple decks. I don’t even know what to attribute their toughness to; I’m as ham-fisted a shuffler as the next guy, but mine have shown nary a scratch or scuff over the course of four or more decks.

Vault X sells packs of 200 soft sleeves for $4.49, 400 sleeves for $7.99, and 1,000 sleeves for $14.99, making it one of the better deals on this list.

Beckett Shield Standard Card Sleeves

No products found.

Beckett Shield produces some standard soft-backed card sleeves designed for protecting the bulk of your collection. Packs of 100 are available on No products found., and the reviews indicate they fit similarly to Ultra PRO's Penny Sleeves. Other reviewers have even mentioned that they’re nearly identical to Ultra PRO's product, so much so that a mixed stack of the two would be impossible to separate.

Beckett Shield’s products seem to be aimed at collectors and not necessarily gamers, though. As a result, I, a heavy-handed shuffler, worry about how long I could make these sleeves last. I know I stated earlier that you shouldn’t expect any penny sleeve to last more than a few months, but I still need one that can withstand a week’s worth of shuffling at the very least.

Best Budget Penny Sleeves

Ultra Pro Penny Sleeves

It bears repeating: The Ultra Pro 2.5” x 3.5” Soft Trading Card Penny Sleeves are the best bang-for-your-buck when it comes to cheap, clear-backed, soft sleeves. Despite costing $0.02 per sleeve, they’re still the cheapest you can find online, and many local game stores still sell them at $1 per pack.

Sometimes, a card just needs a sleeve, and it doesn’t matter what kind. Maybe it's that $0.25 rare you’re hoping will someday jump up in value, or maybe it's an entire deck of jank you’re playing as a bit at the kitchen table this weekend.

Whatever the reason, penny sleeves have got your back. They’re the cheap solution to your card protection needs, and are available just about anywhere Magic cards are sold. The originals still happen to be the cheapest you can buy online, and they’re also easily the best.
